Types of Motorcycle Insurance
If you go out shopping for a new motorcycle, you need to consider your needs, lifestyle and your budget. The same criteria holds true when you start looking for motorbike insurance. Although at times, it seems like an extra expense that is not really necessary, that is not true. According to the law, you have to have motor bike insurance. Not only is it the law, but you should also have insurance from a financial perspective. You have to protect your investment, and you have to protect yourself in case of an accident. When you start shopping for coverage for your vehicle, you have to know what options you want to have. There are some types of insurance that are mandatory and there are other types that are up to you whether you want them or not.
Liability is the type of insurance that you absolutely have to have. This is what covers the cost of bodily injury and/or property damage to other people. One thing that makes coverage for motorcycles different than regular auto insurance is passengers. It is not required that you include guest passenger liability insurance for your motorbike, but it is a really good idea. You may have to specifically ask for this to be included in your policy.
Collision insurance is the type that covers the cost of damage to your bike if you are in an accident. Most people include this type of insurance in their policy because if there is an accident, they want to be able to replace the bike. The exception to this is if you have an older bike that is not worth very much. In that case, it does not make sense to add this type of coverage because it will end up costing you more than it would to replace the cycle.
Comprehensive insurance is another option that you have when you are shopping for coverage for your cycle. This covers you for damages that are caused by something other than an accident. Some examples of this are theft, vandalism, fire or natural disasters. If something like this happens to your bike, you will be able to have it replaced. If you do not have this type of coverage, you will have to buy a new one completely out of your pocket. One thing you should keep in mind is that standard coverage only includes standard parts of the cycle. If you decide to add a side car, a trailer, chrome parts or even a custom paint job, those will not be covered unless you get a special policy that includes them.
Another type of coverage you should consider is uninsured (or underinsured) motorist coverage. This type of coverage is effective if you are in an accident that is clearly caused by another person. If it was their fault, their insurance should cover all of your costs, but if they do not have coverage, it will be left up to you. Having this type of insurance is something you should definitely consider adding to your policy.
