Tips For Making Phone Calls That Build Your Business

If you\’re anything like me the telephone takes on a beastly personality every time I begin to consider calling people for my business. It grows teeth and starts growling. No kidding! Then the longer I contemplate picking it up and dialing a phone number it starts to weigh a 1000 pounds and I just can\’t seem to pick it up. Before long it\’s easier to just not make the calls and my business doesn\’t grow. So I\’ve got a few tips to help you feel better about calling people.

First, the best way to get good at something you don\’t know how to do is to watch someone who does it really well. Take swimming for example. If you can\’t swim you won\’t learn by sitting in the house watching TV. The best way to learn how to swim is to sit on the side of the pool watching your friends as they swim away. Eventually you\’ll get the courage to just jump in. And, I\’ll bet your friends will be there to help you just in case you encounter trouble. So find someone you know that makes phone calls really well and ask them to let you watch and give you advice should you need it. Surely there\’s someone in your life that would be happy to show off their skills for you.

Second, know who you\’re looking to do business with. Isn\’t it great to work with people who are friendly, coachable and teachable? You aren\’t interested in working with people who aren\’t going to work well with you. When you begin your conversation with someone it should go naturally and be a good conversation as if you were talking to a friend. But if it turns out that the conversation just isn\’t feeling right to you and it doesn\’t seem like there\’s a connection with the person on the other end of the phone, give yourself permission to just kindly end the call.

That brings me to the most important tip I can give you. You must have the correct mindset. Before beginning your phone session, sit down and think about the strongest most business like person you would like to emulate. Who is the toughest most powerful business person you can think of? I would give you an example but it may not be someone you can relate to. But think BIG and FAMOUS!! Or perhaps it\’s someone close to you that you admire.

The person you are about to call has to qualify for your time. They will be lucky to get to work with you. Make the call short and direct. You may have to stop early if the fit just isn\’t there. Don\’t get attached to this person. You shouldn\’t care if they do what they need to do to get on board with you. Do you really want to work with someone who isn\’t coachable anyway? And it\’s really up to them to decide whether or not you are who they\’re looking for.

Now, put on your employer hat. You are calling these people to interview them and hire them to work with you in your business. How will this call go considering they are being interviewed for a position in your business? You wouldn\’t call someone for an interview and start begging, nagging, bugging or convincing them to work for you, would you? There was a time in my life before becoming an entrepreneur that I wished employers would call and beg me to work for them. And as I have a background in human resources, I can attest to the fact that I never called someone to beg them to start working with us.

Now that you have your mindset correct, begin asking your qualifying questions. Always maintain your posture as your favorite strong business person conducting an interview. If you\’ve called someone who\’s being difficult then give yourself permission to kindly let them know this may not be what they\’re looking for and bid them a great day. Once the phone is hung up, shout as loud as you can NEXT!! Pick up the phone and make your next dial. Keep in mind only 1% of the people you call will actually take action and that\’s not your problem it\’s their choice.

Best wishes on your entrepreneurial endeavors. You can conquer the phone beast! Now make the call!
