Types of Observatory Domes
A dome resembles arches because the architectural designs they have involve great structural potency. An observatory dome has a spherical enclosure in which there are equipments that are used to observe the events on earth or other planets. These dome constructions involve high quality material but can be built with a variety of materials like concrete, bricks, wood and stones. Today, there are domes built with polythene, fiberglass and plastics. The human activities noted in observatory enclosure are geology, volcanology, astronomy, meteorology, and oceanography. The equipment in the dome is highly sensitive because of which they are kept inside these observatories and even while using they are used quite carefully. Those who are not properly trained are not allowed to use it. The enclosures have an opening in the upper most area of the sphere. That opening is only used when the telescope is being used. When the telescope is not in use, the slit or opening will be closed. These domes use nut and bolt for tightening all parts together. An assembly of trained professionals would be arranged to decide and manage the spare parts, drilling of these bolt holes, measurement and power tools. The bigger holes for the latches and holes are cut and shaped in the plant of manufacture.
There are domes today which have rotators built in with the modern technology. These rotators allow the opening to change its position while being used for measurement and when not being used for observation. Some of these are constructed on the topmost surface of the earth. Here, it measures the portions of light in electromagnetic spectrum or radio waves. These domes are known as ground based lighthouse or earth surfaces. The opening portion is totally removed when the telescope is used. It is known as all roof observatories. The ground based observatories are mostly constructed where the effects of atmospheric turmoil are reduced. The area has clear sight where there is no light pollution. They are positioned in the areas where dry air and dark sky is available. The radio lookout observatories are located quite far away from the urban population so that the television transmission and other rays cannot interfere. The best position for the radio observatories is a place between valleys. Here, it is protected from electromagnetic turbulence.
There are elevated types of observatories as well. In these types of observatories, the instruments used are installed above the surface of earth. They can also be related with airborne type of observatories or space type. In the airborne type of domes, the instruments are installed above the surface of the earth while on the other hand the space type domes are equipped at outer space. The mirador might be installed to course along outside space of earth to observe the objects of astronomy which are impossible to view from airborne type of observatories.
The space telescopes used for these purposes are free from all types of intervention of radiations and earth’s atmospheric effects. These domes have great importance today. For many purposes, these observatories hold high place in scientific society. Astronomy is quite popular in every single part of the world, but not just that is why these domes are important but also because geology and ocean conditions are understood with the help of these domes. The modern technology has introduced new and new equipments to make it easier and safer. Although they are delicate, the professionals are well aware of how to use them properly. These domes are also sold these days and people are willing to buy them at high prices.
