6 Easy Tips on First Aid Training

Every year we waited for summer to set in. It was summer camp time, a favorite among all of us. Each year we were taken to a different camp site and spent four days there. Camp consisted of a lot of physical activities, races, swimming, games and a lot of sports. We were also given ‘life lessons’, things we would not learn in a classroom but were absolutely necessary in our day to day life. We were taught how to live with just bare minimum things in our room, no fancy air-conditioning here. A few other things we learnt were first-aid and survivor skills. Some of these have come handy years after camp was over.

A list of ‘Things to Carry’ was always given to us while enrolling for camp. They were basic essentials such as, clean napkins, antiseptic creams and solutions, band-aids and cotton swabs. This basic equipment was all that we needed in case any of us needed to treat cuts or scratches.

We played a lot of sports, throw ball, basketball and cricket. Invariably some of us would fall or hurt ourselves in the whole spirit of wining and playing. Cuts, scratches, bruises and wounds had to be treated almost immediately. A few basic rules were:

– Wash the affected area with clean water; this eliminates external germs such as mud, dirt and dead cells.

– Next, dab an antiseptic solution on a clean cotton ball and apply on the affected area.

– If it’s not a deep would, apply an antiseptic cream and let it heal.

For more serious wounds that involve a fair amount of blood, we were given a different set of rules, such as:

– Take a clean napkin and wipe off external elements such as mud, dirt and blood, use a little water here. Make sure you don’t come in contact with the blood directly.

– After that, hold another clean napkin on the wound until the blood stops flowing out. If this takes more than a few minutes call for professional help.

– If the blood stops flowing, apply an antiseptic solution and tie a bandage firmly over it.

These were a few basic steps we had to keep in mind while taking care of our classmates. With minimal equipment at our disposal, we made sure nothing went wrong.

First-aid means the act of giving immediate help to an injured or ill person. This kind of treatment is administered to take care of minor injuries or until professional medical help can be sought. Administering first-aid is quite simple and requires almost no equipment. It is essential for anyone to learn a few first-aid techniques, they could come handy anywhere, at work, at home, at the playground, in school or even while travelling. To be helpful you could always carry a few band-aid or an antiseptic cream in your bag or car. Not only will it help you in case there is ever a need, but it could almost save someone’s life in a crisis situation.
