9 Side Effects of Hair Transplants
Like any procedure, hair transplant surgery also has its own set of probable side effects. You must be well aware of this, in order for you to well equipped with what to expect and how to deal with it. So here are nine common side effects of a hair transplant.
1. Bleeding
Bleeding is a side effect that you will more likely expect, however this will only be minor rather than some profuse flow. It will come from the donor and recipient sites and will only last for a day or two. However if the bleeding persists after this period of time, it is important to notify your surgeon right away.
It is advised that you refrain from any strenuous activity, such as exercise, lifting objects and even bending over to control scalp pressure.
2. Swelling and Pain
Swelling happens to almost all patients after a hair transplant. It usually happens on the scalp, eyes, and the forehead. Along with this swelling is also an accompanying pain. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe a medication to relieve the swelling. But it usually subsides within the first week after the procedure.
3. Numbness
Everyone who undergoes a hair transplant would most likely feel a numbing sensation on the areas affected. This usually lasts for a couple of weeks, and it is due to the impaired circulation of the capillaries in this area. As the healing process progress throughout the coming weeks, this numbing sensation will slowly be relieved.
4. Scabs
Scabs form at the implantation site, around the hair follicles. It also forms on the incision site, if a patient underwent an FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) procedure. Never scratch these scabs, and simply leave them be, because only signals that your wounds are on the process of healing. Over the first few days, these scabs will just come off on their own when showering.
5. Itching
Some may also have an itchy scalp after surgery, especially on the implantation site. This itchiness is due to the scabs that are forming. Never scratch these because this area is still sensitive while it undergoes the healing process. Touching and scratching it might cause and irritation and might delay healing, or worse, affect the final results.
6. Hair Loss
You might also observe your new hairs falling off, two weeks after your surgery. This is only a natural reaction, and is called a “shock loss.” Even some of the hairs surrounding the implants would also shed, leaving you with some bald patches and even thinning. But new hairs will just grow soon enough, and in time you will regain that full head of hair.
7. Scarring
Scarring can be most apparent when a person had an FUT procedure. A long linear scar would be marked across the back of the person’s head. This will be visible if he likes to wear his hair short.
8. Hiccoughs
Some people who had a hair transplant done experience hiccoughs, and there is also no clear explanation why it happens. It affects over 5% of hair transplant clients, but it doesn’t really signal anything serious. They can only cause some annoyance and embarrassment. However this will disappear in a day or two.
9. Infection
Hair transplants no matter what the technique is used cause some break on the skin’s integrity. If you are not careful enough to protect those affected areas (either the donor or recipient site) you expose it to infection. Also, by not following aseptic technique when cleansing the incision wound, in an FUT procedure, can also make it vulnerable to pathogenic attack.
