Top Seven Gift Ideas for the Winter Season
A cozy fireplace, a steaming mug of coffee, a blanket and a good book make for a pleasant evening in this cool autumn weather. Yes, the weather is certainly getting chilly, and it’s time to think about what makes this season a lovely time of year. It’s often easy to choose presents for a person during summer – a whole range of outdoor activities is opened up to you for possibilities. There’s toys and games for at the beach, barbecuing tools, outdoor sports equipment, sun hats and sandals, picnic and backyard dining utensils, gardening tools – you name it! When it comes to winter, however, you might need to think outside the box a little to come up with the perfect gifts for the one you love.
In this article I’d like to give you a few ideas that you may not have considered before. Something to get those creative juices flowing and set your mind at ease about the upcoming birthday or special event. What can you do to make that person’s winter day a bit more sunny?
Umbrellas – This may seem like a boring gift, but have you discovered some of the more quirky umbrellas that are on the market these days? Umbrellas with golf ball handles, with a favourite AFL team logo, a soccer ball look, children’s animal umbrellas, and cartoon umbrellas, to name a few. Do a search on Google for what you’re after on an umbrella, and you might just be surprised what you find!
Thermal Insulated Mugs – These are a must on cold, drizzly days. Getting up early (in the dark, no less), shivering into your cold car, and commuting to work can be downright dreary. However, with a warm cup of your favourite beverage, you’ll be much more able to warm up and enjoy that personal time in the car. Don’t think that a thermal mug has to be boring either! What are the individual’s interests? Thermal mugs come with Holden logos, Coca Cola logos, AFL team logos, plus a huge range of other designs.
Mugs – While we’re on the topic of hot drinks, why not a mug for around the house? There are personalized mugs, sports mugs, Ford and Holden mugs, and mugs in crazy shapes and sizes (my Dad loves jumbo mugs!). Stuff it with a packet of hot chocolate or mocha, some marshmallows, and his or her favourite chocolate bar, wrap it with cellophane, and you’ve got a piping hot winter present all ready to go, at minimal cost.
Reading Lights – Snuggling down under the covers with a good book is a great way to pass the cold winter evenings. Clip-on reading lights are a great way to create the ideal atmosphere. Turn out the overhead light, snuggle down with a good book, and attach your compact book light to the top of the page. These are an inexpensive gift, but they make a great little present. If you want to add to it, buy a book to go with it, find a bookmark, and together with the reading light, you’ve set your friend up with all the right ingredients for a relaxing evening.
Socks, Scarves and Slippers – Stripy socks, toe socks, fuzzy socks, slipper socks, socks with his/her name on it, there’s heaps of sock ideas to keep your feet toasty. And when you get into the slipper arena, the options are practically endless!
Clothing – Jumpers and jackets are pretty common clothing items that come to our minds when we think of warmth. But what about for the outdoorsmen amongst us? What about a lined fishing vest or a hardy hunting vest? Besides being warm, this sort of vest provides plenty of pockets to store equipment and tackle.
Computer Gizmos – Then there are the ones who cannot be pulled away from their computers, winter OR summer! There’s not a heap of budget gifts to purchase for computer geeks as far as items they need. Sure you can get them a USB stick, but how exciting is that? Not very. Think outside the box. Why not give them a USB aquarium? Attaching to the USB port, this aquarium can be operated from the computer screen – feed your fish, play with them. Or the USB missile launcher…but be warned – YOU might be target practice! When you begin thinking along these lines, there are heaps of fun little gifts designed specifically for the computer whiz.
I could keep going, but this should give your creativity a little kick start as you think of the endless options for gift giving in the colder months. Have fun crunching through those autumn leaves, and stay warm!
