Orthodontic Treatment
If you are looking for orthodontics care, you can check with friends, co-workers, neighbors, and relatives and get references. If you are new to an area or your contacts are unable to provide you with the name of an orthodontist, you can find a list of orthodontists in your area by checking with the American Association of Orthodontists. Braces can improve your smile whether you are an adult or a child.
Braces are not just for people wanting to have a beautiful smile, but are required for individuals with improper bites which may result from either crooked teeth or disproportionate jaw issues or both. These issues can interfere with eating and speaking properly. In order to correct these problems, the orthodontist uses braces and retainers to straighten the teeth. The type of braces and the length of time you will be required to wear the braces varies on the severity of the problem. Years ago, orthodontics treatment was recommended for teens and pre-teens having problems with their bit, today these treatments are being used not only for teens and pre-teens but for adults with orthodontic problems as well because it is never too late to improve your smile or correct your dental problems. So why are adults seeking orthodontic treatments? The primary reason is that most adults did not receive the orthodontic treatment they should have had as a child and are now having issues with headaches, earaches, and difficulty in biting and chewing.
If you are a candidate for orthodontics, you will likely be told so by your general dentist. When you first meet with an orthodontist, they will take x-rays, take impressions of your bite and teeth, conduct an oral examination and discuss an individualized treatment plan.
When we think of appliances, many of us think of the traditional stainless steel wire type; however, there is now the option for color stainless steel brackets. While this traditional style still exists and is still very effective, there are other types as well. For individuals that are allergic to the nickel in the stainless steel style, there are gold-plated stainless steel and titanium appliances. There are also clear ones that blend more with the natural color of the teeth and are less conspicuous. There are lingual braces which are custom made that are bonded to the back of the teeth and make them invisible to others. For people with a slight orthodontic problem, may be able to use Invisalign, this is virtually invisible and can be removed when eating or brushing teeth.
The type of appliances that is recommended by your orthodontist depends on several factors such as: the severity of crookedness of your teeth or bite; if extractions are required; if jaw surgery is required; if headgear or special appliances are necessary; and the amount of time you will need to wear braces. Then, of course, there are other factors to consider such as dental insurance coverage and out of pocket costs. It is best to schedule an appointment to discuss your many options for treatment.
