One of the best ways to lock down a job in the IT field is to get your degree in some discipline of information technology. There are hundreds of technical schools around the country and each one has a well-connected career placement center. The great thing about these degrees is, the curricula actually build experience, as most of what you learn is hands-on problem solving, technical work, project management, and organization. The abstract, “book-learning” portion of the program helps you learn the language of the field as you study diagrams and discuss the ins and outs of various information systems, then you apply that knowledge in the lab exercises. The labs not only help you sharpen your own skills: they allow you to learn from others, and they form you. You learn how to work together as a team to solve complex technical issues pertinent to today’s information market.

A B.S. in information technology is a traditional, four-year degree in which you learn how to operate and improve current informational and organizational systems. Generally this degree will equip you to write source code tailored to a company’s needs, and maintain, update, and debug the code whenever necessary. You will also explore the exciting frontier of software design, as you learn how to build new and improve upon existing interfaces.

If you would like a more specialized degree, you can opt for a concentration in information security or software engineering. Both of these tracks equip you for high-level problem solving, as you will learn to develop secure information systems, how detect vulnerabilities in existing systems, and how to mange and correct those problems. With incidents of hacking making the daily headlines, this specialization couldn’t be more in-demand.

Already have your B.S. in information technology? There are several graduate programs that will sharpen your skills even further for this competitive jobs market. M.S. programs in IT focus on doing as much as possible with very few resources. This challenge will allow you to serve and negotiate with the type of clients you’re most likely to encounter: those on a tight budget and those with major time constraints. You may also choose to focus your graduate studies in a specific direction like information systems management, where you will apply your expertise to high-level security issues. The field of healthcare informantics is another specialization that prepares you to design more efficient technology for the medical field, both for the collection and retention of data, and for the development of interactive healthcare systems.

If it is not practical for you to consider a three-to-four year degree, followed by a graduate degree, many schools offer a fast-track MBA program. These degrees have a broader focus of studies, touch on several disciplines within the IT field, and culminate in learning to create a business plan. As opposed to a traditional two-year graduate degree, you could earn your MBA on the fast track in less than one year. This option also tends to be a little easier on the wallet, and if you decide to continue your education after you complete the fast track, most facilities allow you to transfer your earned credits.
