Uses of a Laser Printer

Laser printers are best known for their precision and speed and although their cartridges, toner cartridges, can be expensive, they last a long time and produce many pages of text – making them a lot more economical than you might think. The type of printer you choose will depend solely on what your requirements are and what environment you will be using it in. This type of printer is best-suited to office environments because they can print text documents speedily and in high volumes (depending on the printer’s specifications). Laser printers use the same technology as photocopiers allowing them to print so quickly and efficiently.

Different Types of Laser Printer

There are a huge range of printers to choose from and it’s easy to get confused between all of the different types and product specifications. If you are only wanting a laser printer for personal use it might be worth looking for a low-end printer that can print up to 200 pages per week – this should be efficient unless you work from work and need something that will produce more printouts. A small office environment would require a printer that’s more advanced, perhaps one that averages 1000 pages per week and 24 pages per minute (PPM). At the higher end of the scale are high-end printers that can print around 700 pages per minute – this type of printer will come with a hefty price tag and would only be necessary for large offices and corporations.

Resolution

The average resolution for laser printers is around 600 DPI (that’s dots per inch) and this resolution would be suitable for everyday personal use. High-end printers can go up to 2400DPI but this resolution would only be necessary for large production companies and large offices. The higher the amount of dots per inch – that’s the amount of dots that can be printed across a line that is the span of one inch – the better and crisper the printing quality will be.

Paper weight

If you are using for either personal or business use, as well as printing text documents, you may also want to print labels, greetings cards and invitations. ‘Gsm’ is a paper weight measurement, and you will need to find out what your printer’s gsm so you know what your printer is capable of handling in terms of paper weight. If you want to print of different types of paper you will need to find out its weight and see if your printer is capable of printing on it. The weight of paper is often given in grams per square metre (gsm) and normal A4 photocopying paper is usually around 100gsm, whereas a piece of card is around 220gsm. Find out what paper weight your printer can handle before you purchase it to avoid any disappointment later on!

Paper handling

A laser printer for personal use probably won’t need any extra paper trays but for the office you may want the option of additional trays for large volumes of printing. You should check the printer has the functionality to add extra trays should you or your corporation need them.
