Dodging The Debt Collector

There are businesses out there that advertise all the time about how they can help get you out of debt fast, cheap, and easy. But should we not be more interested in preventing ourselves from getting into debt in the first place?

What happens when you get behind Viagra Professional on paying your bills? Or what happens when a creditor’s records mistakes you for being behind on paying a bill?

The most confusing bills to pay are medical bills. This is because after you receive a medical service, the provider sends a bill to your health insurance and to you.

Sometimes the health benefits are not clear at the time of service and they are not sure who to bill. And sometimes there is more than one insurance agency that helps to pay your medical bills.

Before you go in and visit a doctor or have a medical procedure done, make sure that you understand your health insurance and what you are covered for. Not all doctors will accept your medical plan, so you may have to do some searching around for an office that will accept it.

You can do a search online to find a doctor who can provide you with the kind of service you need and then call the office and ask them specifically if they will accept your insurance plan.

Most health insurance agencies will give you a guide or a list of doctors they know will cover you. Even if you are given this list, you still need to call them and make sure they will accept your medical benefits because sometime doctors will change who they accept and it will not be updated.

If you take these preventative steps at the beginning, then you will not be surprised when you get the bill. You will already have a good guess as to how much you are going to have to pay for the service that you received.

This will help you budget your money and keep you out of debt. Something else that you need to make sure you do is to update all of your information.

Some people tend to move around a lot and change their address. Whenever you move, you need to inform all the people that you pay bills of your new address change.

You can set up a forwarding address at the post office so that you are guaranteed to receive all of your mail right after you move. Your creditors will continue to send you bills and reminders to pay those bills to the same address unless notified otherwise.

If these bills that are being sent to the wrong address continue to be ignored for more than five or six months, then those creditors will send your bills to a debt collection agency. The longer your bill sits in the debt collection agency, the more interest you owe them in addition to the original bill.

So it is in your best interest to pay any bills you have right away and to clear up any debt that you may be responsible for. You do not want a debt collector coming to talk with you about any money that you owe them.

If you are having a hard time paying your bills, look at your budget and see what you can eliminate. Keep track of how much you spend every month on gas, groceries, clothing, utilities, and eating out.

After you have recorded these things for a few months, write out the total amounts of how much you spend for each category. This makes it really easy to see where all of your money is going and if it is being spent responsibly.

If you cut out all of the unnecessary items, it will help you save more money and pay off your current debts. The best advice is to pay off your debts as soon as you can.

Following these guidelines will help you avoid the debt collector and keep you out of debt. Be smart about where you spend your money and take control of your finances.
