Green Day Tickets – Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Wins Two Tony Awards

A few years ago, anyone would have scoffed about the idea of SoCal punk rock band Green Day having anything to do with the Tony Awards, or Broadway for that matter. But flash forward to 2010, and the band’s atypical Broadway Levitra musical American Idiot won two awards at the 64th annual Tony Awards on June 13. Although American Idiot lost Best Music to Memphis, the show did win awards for Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design, reports Billboard.com. Billie Joe Armstrong and the rest of the band were on hand to open the event with a performance with the cast of American Idiot as well.

Based on Green Day’s rock opera of the same name, American Idiot signals a shift in trends on Broadway, at least according to Newsweek. Directed by Michael Mayer (who co-wrote the show’s libretto with Green Day frontman Armstrong), American Idiot follows three young rock stars navigating their way through George W. Bush-era America. Explaining why an unconventional show like American Idiot has thrived on Broadway, Newsweek said, “Gifted artists have worked out a production style that suits the new material-no small feat when you realize how ridiculous the phrase ‘the new Broadway musical from Green Day’ would have sounded just a few years ago. Even now it’s a little crazy.”

Armstrong told Billboard.com that the band knew that a story could come out of the band’s album American Idiot and its 2009 follow-up, 21st Century Breakdown, but the stage wasn’t Green Day’s first consideration. “Originally, we thought about doing a movie version of it. I always thought it should be staged in some way,” Armstrong revealed. American Idiot opened at the Berkeley Rep in September 2009 and ran until that November (it was originally slated to wrap up a month earlier), eventually making its way across the country and to Broadway.

While American Idiot is packed with Green Day music, fans will still want to get Green Day tickets to see the band live in concert. Green Day is currently on tour in Europe, but the band will return to North America in August. Head online for Green Day tickets to see the band in cities like Camden, N.J.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Washington, D.C.; Hartford, Conn.; Boston, Mass.; Detroit, Mich.; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colo.; Phoenix, Ariz.; San Francisco, Calif.; Los Angeles, Calif. and more. Green Day will remain in North America through early September before embarking on a South American road trip in October.

While on tour in the States this summer, Green Day will perform at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago’s Grant Park. The 2010 edition of Perry Farrell’s music festival will take place from Aug. 6-8 and will see Green Day sharing the headlining duties with Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, Phoenix, the Strokes and a reunited Soundgarden. Also performing at this year’s Lollapalooza are Spoon, Devo, Cut Copy, Gogol Bordello, Wolfmother, the National, Yeasayer, MGMT, Erykah Badu, Slightly Stoopid, the New Pornographers and more. Green Day will headline Lollapalooza on Saturday, Aug. 7.
