Many two by fours are used as wall studs. In most homes there will be a stud behind your walls, every sixteen or twenty four inches. Some may have very large knot holes. They may also be twisted or warped. These timbers are not suitable as wall studs or for many framing jobs. They are good if you need smaller pieces of scrap wood for odd purposes.

Stud grade is used for most home construction. This is what you find behind most walls today. In order for your walls to be straight, you need good wood. There is little twisting or warping. There will still be some knots and knot holes. When you shop for stud grade two by fours, inspect each board, if you can. Offer to load your own wood. You may find places that let you load your own.
