He’s got another act up his sleeve, as former Police front man Sting covers classic singles on stage with one of the most internationally recognized Philharmonics in musical history. For his Symphonicity Tour, Sting has thrown out his guitar for a violin, bringing along the 58 member London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a global phenomenon.

Performing iconic numbers like “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and “Roxanne,” his music has taken on a different melody as classical replaces classic rock. “I normally don’t like pop music with orchestras because you basically end up sawing long notes being pop ballads,” Sting said in an interview upon announcing the summer tour.
This is an exception, he admits, entertaining audiences with a full appreciation of the classical notes that the Royal Philharmonic has perfected over the years. “I’ve always liked classical music, since I was young, and stolen from it royally,” Sting says. It wasn’t until 2008, nearly 35 years after Sting started in the business, that the Wallsend, England native finally got the opportunity to work with classical music first hand; he was paired with the Chicago Symphony, and eventually went on to work with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

“Performing with both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra was truly a highlight of my career,” Sting said on his website. From there the “Symphonicity” idea came to mind, a play on The Police’s 1983 final album Synchronicity. The tour title is also the name of the companion album released by Deutsche Grammophon this summer. In it, Sting’s collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic will be immortalized in tracks like “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” as performed live on stage.

The world tour is something Sting never thought would come to fruition; debuting in Vancouver June 2nd, Sting was overwhelmed with such a unique opportunity along with his own personal accomplishments, which are highlighted in the show’s set list. “This is a big deal for me,” he said to Entertainment Tonight hours before the show. “It’s a huge responsibility. At the same time, I’m thrilled – like a kid with a new train set. It’s a mixed bag of emotions…I take what I do seriously; I don’t take it for granted.” Yet performing with big names is nothing new to Sting, who has collaborated alongside some “opera luminaries” like Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, Renee Fleming and Kiri Te Kanawa, among many others.

Sting’s music has long touched within the classical musical arena, however; his first attempt was found in the 2006 album Songs from the Labyrinth. Inspired by 16th century composer John Dowland, Sting followed up that number one album with If on a Winter’s Night, another top Billboard classic.
