Thinking About Buying A Motor Home? VW Campervans Are Still The Way Forward

Entering the market on the back of the popularity of the Type 1 vehicle – known more commonly as the Beetle – that was delivered into VW dealers in 1938, the VW campervan (or Type 2 as it was officially named) was released in 1950 and although it was expected to be popular, no one could have ever imagined to what extent.

Designed by Ben Pon, a VW importer from Holland, the full design came from a quick drawing Pon made in 1947 and although it remained as a drawing for longer than Pon would have liked, a prototype was created in less than 12 weeks when the company decided to get the ball rolling. Not perfect by any means, the vehicle went through considerable change and was developed into one of the world’s most loved vehicles.

Whilst the Type 2 was actually available in various other styles (surprisingly to hear for many new fans and followers is the fact that it was produced in a pickup truck style, as well as a delivery truck style with no side windows), the campervan variation is by far the most popular that has been created by VW.

Side opening doors allow for easy access to the main body of the vehicle, which is packed with everything you would ever need on a camping holiday. A comfortable double bed, for example, is built in alongside a cooking hob with two rings, fridge and table. Plus, with the possibility of attaching an awning to make a fantastic amount of living space, you have all you could ever need – with the exception of a toilet – to live out of the campervan for as long as you needed.

It’s difficult to say exactly why the VW campervans reached such heights of popularity as they did – and still have reached. They aren’t overly aesthetically pleasing, prescription cialis online don’t have a fantastic MPG ratio and the originals were prone to various things going wrong. Still, however, they received a mass following throughout the 1960s and 1970s, largely by those involved in the hippie movement, which itself is cited by some as the reason their popularity has been maintained.

Alongside this, however, is the fact that they offer a substantial amount of space, without looking like a van, making them ideal for what they are also known for – beach vehicles. Head down to the majority of beaches in the western world, whether Fistral beach in Cornwall or Long Beach in New York and it would be surprising if you didn’t see a VW camper parked up, after being used for transporting friends, food and surfboards to the sand and sea.

Going through many changes throughout its lifespan, VW dealers are still selling the campervans to this day. They may be more updated than the first models were 60 years ago, in some respects taking away that 1950s beach vehicle charm, but being able to drive around in what is now an iconic vehicle is the idea of a perfect automobile for many drivers.
