If you were to speak to someone 20 years ago about owning an electric car, they wouldn’t look at you strangely and they wouldn’t think you were talking about something that was impossible to build. However, what they would think was that you were talking about a remote controlled car and not a full size car that could actually be used by people.

There has been much talk about electric cars in recent years, largely due to the massive amount of positive aspects they bring with them in respect of reducing, if not completely wiping out CO2 emissions.

A report Viagra Professional by My Electric Car detailed just how much CO2 emissions could decrease by in the UK through use of an electric car, with a spokesman for the Department of Transport claiming that there could be up to 40% of the current CO2 emissions saved by utilizing electric cars in the UK.

This may be a substantial figure and massively interesting for those who have a deep interest in environmental issues, but what benefits do electric cars bring for those who don’t think twice about what effect their car is having on the environment?

Well, it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that if a car runs on electricity, it doesn’t need petrol and therefore if it doesn’t petrol, you can save yourself 120.5 pence every time you would have put one litre of unleaded petrol in your car (120.5 pence being the average cost of unleaded petrol in the UK, according to the April 2010 report by the AA).

There’s no doubting that electric cars are still largely in development and although there are some models around (namely the Reva G-Wiz i), it’s going to be a year or two before we get to see an extensive range of electric cars in dealers around the country.

So what is there to look forward to?

To start with, the ever popular Ford Focus is expected to see an overhaul into an electric version, known as the BEV (battery electric vehicle), by 2011, according to reports by Ford on 16 September 2009. Plans are in place to have the top speed at 85mph and it should be able to cover around 100 miles on a single charge.

For something a little sportier, take a look at Audi e-Tron, which although it is still only considered to be a concept, is rumoured to be in Audi dealers within the next 3 years.

If you can’t wait at least 3 years for the e-Tron to enter Audi dealers, you don’t fancy a Ford Focus and the majority of other electric cars on the market at the minute don’t take your liking (largely because a lot of them appear to have been designed to be included in a cartoon), then give it a year and you should be able to purchase a fully electric version of the popular Volvo C30.

Electric cars are without doubt the way forward in terms of car fuel type at the moment. Petrol isn’t going to last forever and although steps have been taken to build cars that have features to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, there is always going to be some entering the environment and the only way around this is to be using a fully electric car.
