Understanding How MRE Meals Came About

There are not a lot of people that understand what a MRE meal is. These are not very common in our society but they are becoming more and more popular.

MRE stands for meals ready to eat. These are the meals that come packaged and prepare for you to eat right after you have opened them.

These meals seem to be most common in the armed forces. The reason that so many people in the armed forces are introduced to this type of food is because it is lightweight, easy to pack and nutritious.

There are a wide variety of meals that are available in MRE form. When soldiers are deployed they will usually become familiar with all of the different meals that the military offers in MRE form.

The armed forces and the government first starting handing out rations of food to soldiers during the civil war. During this time the rations were much different than they are today.

While the solder’s were fighting the civil war they did not receive food that was in an MRE package. Instead they received what the government had deemed to be enough food for a full-grown adult man.

There was a period of time during the Second World War that the rations that were given out depended on what the mission of the soldier was. This helped the soldier to get the proper nutrients and the right amount of food for their job.

There were budget cuts after the Second World War that took a lot of these programs out of the armed forces. After the funding was cut many of the branches of the military returned to the canned wet foods for soldiers.

Nowadays, there are different foods for different missions and the soldiers are able to get all of the nutrients that they need. When they are in extra hot areas they are able to stay hydrated and also get all of the vitamins and minerals they need.

It was in 1963 that the Department of Defense began packaging and preparing the MRE meals that are used today. Although the meals have changed since that time, the premise of the meals is exactly the same.
