Preparing for a Flood

The most common natural disaster by far in the United States is the flood. A flood can strike in every state and territory, even if it seems very unlikely.

There are many different types of floods. Some will build up overtime through excessive rain or melting snow.

Flash floods are different in nature and can develop instantaneously. Often, there is not even a raincloud in the sky when these floods strike.

Other floods can occur when a dam breaks. No matter where you live it is important that you prepare for a flood.

It is vitally important to prepare if you life downstream or in a low-lying area near a body of water or a dam. Even the smallest bodies of water can flood occasionally.

The first thing you will want to do is put together an emergency kit. This kit should contain non-perishable food, water, radio, flashlight, batteries, first-aid kit and so forth.

You should make one kit for every person in your family. It is also a good idea to store at least one in your car in case you cannot return to your home when disaster strikes.

Developing a specialized kit for your pet is also a very good idea. You will still need to take your pet with you and care for it when an emergency occurs.

It is not fair to them to leave them behind to fend for themselves. The kits you prepare should also contain copies of prescriptions, medications, clothing, bedding, and copies of other important documents such as social security cards and insurance.

After you have put these kits together, store them in easy to grab locations and make sure everyone knows where they are. Gather your family together and discuss what you will do if a flood strikes.

Choose a meeting location near your home, in a neighboring city, and outside the state that are in high locations in case you cannot meet at some of these locations. Discuss how you will get in contact with one another.

Select a person outside of the state, such as an extended family member or a friend, which your family members can contact if they cannot get through to each other. Sometimes it is much more difficult to call in town than out of town during an emergency.

This outside person will be able to help your family members coordinate and meet up things went wrong. When you have established a family plan, you will want to contact officials at work, schools, daycare and so forth to see what their plans are during an emergency.

Each of these places should also have an emergency plan. Make sure that their plan fits in with your family plan.

Once you have made a plan, you will want to develop the habit of listening to the news or radio once throughout the day. It is very important to become familiar with the terms associated with a flood.

A flood watch means that it is possible that a flood could occur. A flash flood watch means that a flash flood is possible.

If you receive this warning, a flood could hit at any moment. It will be important to be ready to go at any moment.

Flash floods mostly strike quickly and with very little warning. A flood warning means that a flood has begun or will begin soon.

Be sure to continue listening to the news for updates. If you are told to evacuate, you will need to leave immediately.

There are many reasons that a flood can occur. Some of these reasons include a tropical storm or hurricane, the spring thaw, heavy rains, west coast rain season, levees and dams breaking, and new development or construction.

There are several ways that you can prepare you home to survive a flood. First, you will want to make sure the Tadacip furnace, water heater, and electric panel are elevated.

You may also want to install check valves in the home. Check valves will prevent flood water from filling the drains in the house.

It is also a good idea to consider putting up barriers and sealing up cracks. This will help prevent water from entering the home.

If you run a business, make all of the necessary plans to stay open during a flood. It is very likely that people will still need your services.

You will not want to lose business due to the flood. By properly preparing for a flood, you will experience the minimal consequences.
