Preparing for a Hurricane

It is easy to fall in a pattern of normal, everyday life. However, many different things could disrupt this pattern at a moment’s notice.

It is very important to be prepared for these moments. One of the many things that could disrupt everyday life is the occurrence of a hurricane.

Hurricanes are intense, tropical storms with high winds. These storms usually form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and eastern Pacific Ocean.

In the past, these storms would attack without forewarning. However, today scientists can predict the formation and travel path of the hurricanes so that people can prepare accordingly.

Despite these modern advances, a rogue hurricane can still form and wreak severe damage on coastal cities before a warning can be given. As a result, it is vitally important that you are prepared for the occurrence of a hurricane before you receive warning of one.

It is important for both families and communities to have an established plan in place in case they are told to evacuate immediately. When this command comes, it is not very likely that you and your family members will be in the same location.

You will need to decide whether you are going to meet up and then head out of town or if some family members will head out of town and meet up with you at a pre-designated destination. Be sure to decide where you will meet up both in town and elsewhere.

It will also be important for your family to have a contact outside of the state that they can call if they cannot call their family members. As you each call this person you will be able to coordinate a meeting place and be aware of what is happening to the others.

In addition to pre-planning what to do, you will need to put together a few 72 Hour Kits. These kits should contain water, non-perishable food, a radio, a flashlight, clothing, and other necessities.

Remember to pack medications, medical supplies, copies of prescriptions, bedding, and copies of other important information. Do not forget things like your child’s diapers.

Each family member should have one of these bags stored in an easy to grab location in your home. It is also a very good idea to store one or two in your car in case you are unable to return home during the emergency.

As you are preparing for a possible evacuation, you will probably also want to pack a map into each bag. When you continue to make emergency plans, be sure to talk to school staff, daycare personnel, and your work administration about their policies, what they will do, and what they expect you to do.

Let them know what you plan to do and how you will pick up your children. If you do not have a car it will be very important that you prearrange another means of transportation with a friend.

When disaster strikes it will be very hard to find a ride or get in contact with any of your friends. However, if you have a car, makes sure that it receives the proper maintenance and always has half a tank of gas in it so that it is always ready to go.

Do not forget to take your pets with you when you go. They will be even more susceptible to the elements without their owner to care for them.

It is unfair to leave them behind. Keep in mind that you may have to make special arrangements for them because only service animals are allowed in most public shelters.

How you care for your pets in an emergency will change from the normal routine. You may want to consider packing a special 72 Hour Kit for them.

Think about how you will provide for their needs during this time. When you have made the proper preparations, develop the habit of listening to the news sometime throughout the day.

Become familiar with the vocabulary related to a hurricane. A hurricane watch means that it is possible a hurricane may come to your area.

Continue listening if this is the case and become prepared to evacuate. A hurricane warning means a hurricane is expected to hit your area.

If the authorities order an evacuation you will want to leave town as soon as you can. Follow your emergency plans and this task will be much less of a hassle for you.
