About seventy-five percent of Americans believe that their sight is the most important sense. And about eighty percent of what we perceive through our senses comes from out eyesight.

This shows how important the ability to see is to people and how much everyone depends on it. But if you look at the records, there less than half of Americans who actually have an annual exam to check out their vision.

Why do so many people say that their sight is one of the most important things to them, yet they do not take the time to properly care for them? More than eighty-five percent of eye injuries are preventable and everyone should know how to prevent these problems.

Out of the estimated one point one million to two point four million eye injuries every year, there are about forty-two thousand cases that require hospitalization. There are many different types of injuries that can occur and some of them can be very serious.

In the workplace, there are about one thousand injuries per day, but more than sixty percent of total problems originate from or around the home. These come from using household cleaners and from children who have accidents.

What are some tips to protect your beautiful eyes? The first one is have regular checkups.

You may not want to wear glasses or contacts but you should because they can help them from getting worse and you will be able to see clearly. Not only are doctors able to check your vision to see if you need any extra help, they can also find diseases or any deterioration and be able to stop it earlier.

Wear sunglasses whenever you are out in the sun a lot. They are used to block those harmful ultraviolet rays from hitting you.

Ultraviolet sun rays can develop into cataracts and macular degeneration if you are not careful. There are other types of protective eye gear that you can wear beside just sunglasses.

These include things like indoor and outdoor safety goggles and safety glasses that you can use while using chemicals and performing science experiments. It keeps the fluid from splashing up and causing vision problems.

For those that wear contacts, you need to make sure that you are using them correctly and keeping them clean. They work out great for people who have a hard time wearing glasses and may look better on you.

Be careful not to strain your eyes too much. Take a break from using the computer and focus on something else instead for a while.

You need to blink pretty regularly so that it can lubricate your eyes and keep them from drying out. Some problems are hereditary and it is important to know your family history so you can be aware of how much genetics plays a part in your medical history.

And the last thing is to stay healthy through regular exercise, proper diet, and wearing protective gear when you should. Even though it might feel funny and you might look silly wearing protective glasses cleaning the bathroom at home with harmful chemicals, your eyes will thank you someday for keep them unexposed from those chemicals.
