Started Playing Poker? 4 Things You Must Not Forget

With the amount of media coverage that poker gets, it’s highly unlikely that you haven’t played, considered playing or know someone who plays a variety of poker.

If you’ve started playing poker recently, chances are you’re at the point where you’re playing in games and performing relatively well.

Although you may feel you’ve got to grips with the whole game and can go off without reading up on poker further, there are 4 steps that you must always consider and keep in mind.

1. You can never stop learning – when you start playing poker, you seem to spend hours reading poker resource after poker resource and watching games, just so you can grasp the basics.

One of the most important pieces of information you can keep in mind as a poker player is that you can never stop learning. No matter if you’ve been playing 5 months, 5 years or 50 years, you’ll always be able to learn something new about poker.

2. A bit of poker variety is always good – irrelevant of whether you might only want to be playing, for instance, Texas Hold ‘Em and have little or no interest in another variation, it’s important that you check out and learn at least one other variety.

There are several reasons behind this, but the most obvious is that should your chosen game not be available at the casino you’re at and you still need to make money, if you’re proficient in another variety, you’ll still be able to take home at least some winnings.

3. Don’t forget about the online world (or vice versa) – if this was written 15 years ago, that ‘vice versa’ bit wouldn’t be necessary. The online gambling world was only in its infancy (the first online casino, InterCasino, didn’t launch until January 1996) and so anyone who wanted to play a game of poker needed to do so in the traditional way.

Whilst over the years older players began looking at online poker halls and playing a few hands on these, generally speaking they still preferred the offline variety.

However, a substantial amount of players today haven’t even tried playing offline, starting off their poker playing career solely online.

Whether you play primarily online or offline, make sure you check out the other – they may not interest you initially, but you never know just how suited and beneficial they can be until you try them.

4. It’s OK to stop playing – many beginner players think that to become the best player they can, they have to be playing around the clock. Whilst it is recommended that you steep yourself in as much poker playing and learning as you can, it’s imperative that you take a break now and again.

If you take a walk or go watch TV, that’s great, but you don’t necessarily have to leave the casino. By playing an easy, relaxed game, such as any of the many bingo games, you can give your mind a rest, still continue to play a game and hopefully win money, without having to remove yourself from the casino environment completely.
