Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that grows abundantly in the area.

Their 25,000 permanent residents welcome millions of visitors every year to the full service resort community on the East coast of the United States. Guests come from all around to enjoy the wide beaches, the Atlantic Ocean and an incredible range of activities, entertainment, golf, shopping and dining.

The first tourists in the area were a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola who landed about 50 miles north of present day Myrtle Beach. Later, in 1526, they eventually established the first European settlement in the United States about 30 miles to the south.

That settlement, San Miguel de Guadalupe, was abandoned the following year, and the group returned back to Hispaniola. In the next three centuries, the region’s population grew slowly.

In the late 1800s, and early 1900s, people began to consider the area a vacation spot as they traveled there from all over. Despite its rustic setting, sparse houses and camps and few residents at the turn of the century, people were drawn in by the ocean, sand and trees.

Many more began calling Myrtle Beach home in the 1900s. Today, it is a well known destination for vacationers from all over the country, Canada and abroad.

According to the 2000 Census, the city is at the heart of the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States. Their 800 staff members are dedicated to being “First in Service” and are ready to provide any assistance and answer your questions at any time.

Today, it is a National Historic Landmark with the most significant collection of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting by American artists in the world.

The Children’s Museum of South Carolina is where you can learn about the world through interactive exhibits and programs. There are many activities here for the whole family.

The Family Kingdom is a friendly amusement park and water park by the sea. It features more than 30 rides including a thrilling wooden roller coaster and South Carolina’s biggest Ferris Wheel with one of a kind views of the ocean.

You can also splash down on the Log Flume, freefall 110 feet in the Slingshot Drop Zone, bounce a bit on the bumper cars or race on the go kart tracks. This is a guaranteed good time for your entire family.

The Jungle Lagoon Miniature Golf course welcomes you to the most beautiful and challenging mini golf courses in the state. With lush greenery, tropical plants, waterfalls, caves and life like animals it has two 18 hole entertaining courses.

Myrtle Beach State Park is a great place to relax as you enjoy an open beach, fishing pier, campgrounds and much more. This is a beautiful scene and is known as one of the best ways to spend a day in South Carolina.

The Myrtle Waves is a great way to cool off in the hot humid summer sun. This is a fun water park for all ages.
