The word listen has been used in such a vast varieties of ways that its basic meaning has become misunderstood and has become harmful to the essential meaning and importance of the word. Listening is to understand, to care about another person’s point of view and words. Hearing and listening are very different things that are unfortunately often mixed up and confused for one another. To hear is a simple biological process. Any life form that possesses ears, or an ear canal type of organ, which most life forms on earth do, has the ability to hear. So long as the necessary chemical and physical properties, ear drums and proper brain functions allow a organic being will be able to hear so long as it is in a air filled environment, this does not mean that the being knows how to listen. Listening requires two life forms at least, usually human beings, some animals have slight listening abilities but nothing compared to the level humanity has evolved it to. Communication is based around the act of listening; it is fundamental and crucial in the act of communication and is the key to its success. The key to listening, and in fact the only way one can listen, is to communicate with another person, it is impossible to listen alone.

In relationships listening can be argued as the most important factor to success. Trust is compared but is really dependent on the act of listening. If one does not listen to another, one will never be trusted, for one will never understand a person enough for them to trust. Listening is a selfless act, it is when people give themselves completely to hearing, interpreting and understanding, caring, about what another person has to say. If someone is complaining about work one must listen for the why, for what is really bothering them, if one hears it as endless annoying chatter then the relationship will die, sooner or later. For people to ever work together, live together, or love together they must first start by listening to each other, then understanding can follow as will the rest of the relationship. Time has shown us over and over that misunderstandings, bred by miscommunications, initially driven by language barriers (sadly sometimes still the case in modern day), but heavily due to ignorance of information, lack of listening. People would form opinions and take action based on cold information alone, would never ask a person questions, let alone ever listen to the pleas of a person as they were imprisoned. Countless wars have begun and been fought because of a lack in communication, due to an ignorance in listening.
