Society Versus the Ways of the Lord

The Bible is full of verses telling us what God calls a sin and explaining to us how we are to live our lives. It does a great job of spelling out two different worlds with two different sets of values by which to live by. However, as you well know, the Bible is made up of various books written by various authors. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Bible was organized by topic and God spelled out everything through His prophets and apostles? But it is not that way, it is much like a zig-saw puzzle with pieces scattered through out the Bible and written in different ways depending on who wrote it.

Now any other book written like this would be very confusing and would never make any sense, but after all there really is only one author using many different people to write it down for Him. But then it is confusing to many people and even after a lifetime of studying the Bible, it still brings new insights to those reading it. There are several reasons for this but one of which is I believe God wants us to search His Word and understand for ourselves His will for our lives. Also, if we understood it all at once, it would just be too over whelming for us and God will open our eyes to His truths when we are ready for them.

Man was created to have dominion over all the creatures on earth and before Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree, they were like the other creatures on earth in that all of their daily needs were readily available for them. However, after they did partake from the forbidden fruit, their lives changed drastically. From that point forward until today, there has been a struggle between the ways of our Lord and the ways of the world. In fact, in the society we live in today, it is sometimes hard to even see the ways of God. The Christian who has committed their lives to God is locked in a constant struggle trying to turn from the ways of the world and live according to the laws of the Lord. That is why it is so important that we take out our Bible on a regular basis and put together the pieces of the zig-saw puzzle, asking the Holy Spirit to show us how to live a life more like Christ.

As you challenge your day-to-day activities, making the effort to turn from sin, look at the verses in the Bible that tells you what sin is. They are through out the Bible, but the ones in the New Testament are in more detail. When they are pulled together they can be summarized by lust, pride and greed. Then as you go through your Bible, notice all the promises God makes to you as you make daily choices, turning from these sins. The choices God is asking us to make are summed up by humility, faith and service to others. The Bible even goes one step further to sum these three up as love. If our lives are governed by love, then chances are we are living the way God wants us to.

One word of caution is to be careful with the individuals leading our churches today. So often our church leaders are influenced by the principles of society, many of who attempt to modernize the principles of the Bible. The Bible does not need to be modernized, people in society need to change their ways to live according to the way of the Lord.
