Five Ways to Clearer Writing

When you write, there is always a connection between you and your readers. You may never believe it but writing is another way of communicating towards your readers. You deliver your message through writing the topic down for the people to get your point.

However, there are also some instances where you write for the sake of hooking your reader’s interest and put their attention to your writing. Since you have your own reasons why you are writing for everyone, you should know how to deal with the information that you are sharing and your own perspective about the topic so that you can deliver your point without a doubt.

But the best thing to consider when you are writing is to make your content clear and understandable. Do you think you can write clear content to avoid your readers from confusions?

Just like any writers, they can’t seem to notice the clarity of their writing. Why not observe if there are redundancies within your content. Try to avoid it as much as possible. Eliminate words or phrases that offers the same meaning with the previous statement or if you can find it within a sentence.

Wordiness also affects the quality of your writing. too much unnecessary words can make your content dull. If you want to state something, especially if it is very important for the sake of your content, then state it directly.

There are many things you can do to produce clearer, easier-to-digest writing. Here are five of them.

1. Reduce the use of prepositional phrases.

Prepositional phrases can sometimes be necessary. Most of the time, though, they’re best left out of your writing, especially when you use them to denote possession. As a rule, it’s best to keep prepositional phrases, which leaves sentences sounding stuffy, to a minimum. Too many of them in a single sentence can result in obscuring both the main subject and the primary action.

2. Avoid noun strings.

Using nouns that stand for terminologies and jargon should be avoided, unless you’re writing for a very tight, very specific audience. For instance, don’t say “We have established an inter-department cooperation initiative” when you can say “We have set up a program to promote cooperation among departments.” Sure, it’s longer, but I bet more people will understand it quicker than the alternative.

3. Put the action in the verb.

Put all the action in your sentence into the main verb, avoiding the act of burying it in the subject or spreading it across. That, after all, is what the verb is for. A sentence like “The establishment of the scoring system has been put into effect for the time being” blurs the action when the same idea can be written much, much simpler.

4. Avoid vague nouns.

Some nouns, such as factor, area and degree, are vague on their own. Using them as the main subject or as part of a phrase can lead to muddled, awkward writing.
