How to Maximize Church Leadership Training

Leadership training is defined as a directed effort to hone the skills and talents of leaders and would-be leaders, allowing them chances to grow, learn and change. This is done in order for them to function effectively in the organization.

In this view, there is then a need to distinguish between education and training. Education is focused on developing the individual’s growth alone. His/her involvement in the group may only be a by-product and not the end of his/her learning. Training, on the other hand, is focused on the need of the organization so that individuals are trained because there is a need for individuals to do certain tasks or jobs. The outcome is the main focus as well as the organization not the individual per se.

Church leadership training must be based on its vision and mission. It should also be geared towards the church’s needs and attainment of solution to existing problems. Finally, it should allow the individual to grow and find themselves useful members of the church.

In order to maximize church leadership training, the following problems should be addressed and eradicated. The most common problem concerns time. It can come as the inability of the pastor to train leaders due to lack of time. This is compounded by the people’s lack of time to be trained also. The second problem is the lack of resources. This could come in the form of finances and materials for training. Next is the lack of desire for members to be trained. When uneducated, members and leaders alike do not understand the importance of being trained.

In order to combat these problems, proper information drive and teaching should be made in the church. First, it must be understood that leadership training is a key strategic priority. The pastor cannot effectively lead the flock alone. He/she needs supporters and back-ups to assist him/her nurturing his/her members and meeting their spiritual and related needs. When the church is growing, there is a need for more people to conduct small group Bible studies and fellowships. In order to do more in less time, work must be delegated. Therefore, more mature members must be trained to do the tasks that the pastor can no longer attend to.

Second, there should be a strong sense of definition of the church. People must be made aware of the purpose of the church. If the people will only consider the church to be their spiritual feeding ground and social interaction, then they would not feel the need to be trained. They should be made aware that every member must function as a part of the body. They should know their talents and skills and be willing to use these for the glory of God and the expansion of God’s kingdom on earth.

There is also a need to recognize diversity of values in individuals thus it must be understood that training is more on improving the performance and not changing the person’s individuality. People should be made aware that being in the leadership does not diminish their individuality. They can function well with their God-given talents and skills.

Lastly, every individual must know that he/she is responsible for his/her own development that is achieved through the combination of experience, education and training. When a member begins to understand his/her personal accountability to God to serve God’s people then he/she will be willing to be trained and equipped to do his part in the ministry.
