The Historic Ultimate Fighting Championship Toronto

The Ultimate Fighting Championship Toronto, Ontario, Canada event takes place April 30, 2011. A main event matching Welterweight Champion, and native Canadian, Georges St. Pierre against Jake Shields, plus and interesting under card promises to make this an exciting evening for fight fans. Sell out gate receipts have doubled the previous largest gate for the UFC.

UFC 129 will be the first promotion scheduled for Canada\’s largest city. Rogers Centre will be hosting 55,000 people for the UFC\’s largest ever live crowd after posting it\’s biggest single day sales ever.

St. Pierre, 21-2-0, will be looking for a win that night on his way to a possible match with Anderson Silva. Shields, 26-4-1 intends to spoil those plans by defeating his opponent with superior conditioning, and grappling skill. This should be an interesting match up between two seasoned fighters. St. Pierre has been unbeaten since 2007, and has not lost a round in his last 7 fights. Shields is unbeaten since in his last 15 fights, going back to 2005. On April 30 somebody\’s win streak will end.

The Co Main Event will be Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo, 18-1-0, vs. Canadian, Mark Homnick, 20-8-0. This will match the ground fighter against the striker for the title, and should also make a good show.

Also on the under card for the Toronto event will be UFC Hall of Fame legend, and St. Pierre hero, Randy Couture. Since his last fight on August 10, 2010 he has been involved in acting and working on his clothing and supplement lines while mulling over a possible retirement. He had said that there were only two fights that would interest him in returning, Shogun or Machida. The right fight, to him would be one where he would match up well, resulting in an interesting fight. He really is intrigued with what would happen, who would win. He looks at his fights the same way the fans do, knows what makes a good fight, and always puts on a good show.

The guy is amazing, still engaging in this combat sport, and winning, against the best fighters in the world, at the age of 47. When on the mat with an opponent trying for the submission, and he has to get up, Randy somehow just stands up and nobody can stop him with his mental attitude and conditioning. He always comes in top shape and never disappoints the fans.

Well, he has his next dream fight against Lyoto Machida. He thinks he can pull yet another rabbit out of the hat. Machida thinks otherwise. We will see what happens. The rest of the card should provide some entertaining moments as well.

The original 42,000 tickets for Ultimate Fighting Championship Toronto that were offered, sold out in the first 4 minutes. Ultimately 55,000 tickets sold in 3 days for receipts of $10 million. Do not worry though, if you want to see the show tickets can still be purchased from resellers and the fights can be viewed live through the UFC website or seen on cable, satellite or at selected sports bars.
