Who is Mike Huckabee?

Mike Huckabee was the Governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007 and in 2008 he was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. While Huckabee didn\’t win the GOP nomination in 2008, he did do far better than most predicted. He finished second in delegate count, and third in the popular vote.

Although Huckabee has not yet announced whether he will be running for President in 2012, he is among the leaders when it comes to the polling. In fact; in most polling he is slightly ahead of Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, and Newt Gingrich who are the other Republicans that usually poll over 10%.

Recently Huckabee has said quite a few disturbing things. For example on March 1st of this year he mentioned President Obama having grown up in Kenya. This is disturbing because the President never went to Kenya until he visited the country when he was an adult in the 1980s.

He followed that up with a comment on March 4th about how Natalie Portman is glorifying and glamorizing the idea of out of wedlock children. This statement reminds me of Dan Quayle\’s attack on Murphy Brown. I suppose it\’s not as bad as at least Portman is a real person.

But I do think it\’s quite amusingly hypocritical in light of what he said about Bristol Palin\’s unwed pregnancy during the 2008 presidential election: \”That embodies what Christianity means. We all mess up, the issue is how we respond to it.\”

Huckabee also recently said that he prays for \”spiritual warriors\” to save Americans like himself from being \”enslaved.\” Yes, I\’m serious. He actually said that. It\’s on YouTube, you can hear it for yourself.

I think his most scary recent comment is when he said that he wishes that Americans could be held at \”gunpoint\” so that they can be indoctrinated with a far right wing version of Christianity which includes a greatly distorted version of the history of the United States.

But what is worst about Huckabee isn\’t a few disturbing things that he\’s said (and I\’m only touching on the tip of the iceberg with these four comments) it\’s his far right wing views on social issues.

For example he is opposed to a woman\’s right to choose even in cases of rape and incest. How anyone can think that it\’s ok to force a woman to give birth to a child under those circumstances is beyond my comprehension. Only a man who has no respect for the rights of women could hold such a view.

Another worrying Huckabee view is his belief that more prisons should be privatized. There is a clear correlation between more privatized prisons and more prisoners that can be seen over the last 30 years. The United States already has more prisoners than any other country in the western world. The last thing we need is for there to be a monetary incentive to put people in prison.

There is one good thing about Huckabee: He believes in man made climate change. Unfortunately for him that will be not be a positive in the GOP primaries. In fact; we\’ll probably see that clip of Huckabee saying he believes in man made climate change used in an opponent\’s campaign commercial! Such is the sad state of the GOP today.
