Gardening With Children

Almost all kids love to play with dirt as well as look at colorful things. Gardening involves getting dirt as you will be using soil as your medium. When you look at flowers and any type of plant you will find them to be colorful and visually appealing. That’s why gardening can be loved by children as well. However, you might want to introduce it to them in a more exciting and enjoyable way. This means that you don’t have to be strict when they get dirty, messy and playful when they do their gardening activities.

Your kids are little angels who are curious with just about anything they get in contact with, that’s why your parental supervision is a must especially when they are using their gardening tools. Be consistent and patient when you are guiding and teaching them. Avoid raising your voice whenever they did some mistakes as letting them have their mistakes will make them better little gardeners. Being strict with them will take away their interest and passion for this type of activity.

You can show them around your working area such as your nursery where you are rearing your plants in your garden. Seeing the beauty of your activity will make them more interested with gardening.

If you have a nursery, show them your seeds as well as your seedlings and teach them how to sow seeds in their seedling container or their garden bed if they want to directly sow their seeds. Let them have their own choices and preferences on what seeds they want to plant and where.

If you have the liberty to go to your nearest garden supplier, pick up small gardening tools for your little gardener to encourage his or her gardening desire. Having their own tools for their garden will make them feel like real gardeners but before you let them have their tools, give them a brief instruction on how to use these tools and that they are not toys to play around with. In case you are hesitant on allowing them with these tools, you can buy plastic tools although they are not as convenient to use as with the traditional ones. You can always supervise them whenever they are using these tools to prevent anything untoward from happening.

Let them dig, poke, and turn the soil when they want to as long as you are there to watch over them. Children will always play with dirt and get messy, this is normal and you should let them be kids by the way just as long as they are careful. Have them wash their hands or take a bath though after they are done with their gardening activities.

Show them how to plant the seeds and how to water them. Give all the necessary instructions and information that they need in order to grow healthy plants. At the end of the day, your kids will love you more and thank you for letting them have such a wonderful and fun-filled day.
