A Brief Explanation of Stucco

Stucco is the material used in making and decorating house walls and ceilings. It has been used for long. This is not a new adventure. This should not be confused with plaster in that it was mainly used in the exterior while plaster is used in the interior.

The ancient content of this element was mainly cement and water mixed in a certain proportion. Lime was added to increase the strength and its durability. The modern one is composed of water, Portland cement and sand. It was uesd mostly for exterior designs because it can not rust, rot and resistant to fire. It also retains color for a long period of time as compared to the normal traditional plaster. The appearance of the final product can be varied by using different sizes of the gravel used.

Even though most homes are being constructed using this material its history dates back to the ancient Greeks. In the twentieth century Portland cement started engaging itself in commercial production. This was due to the growth in population and more people were in need of strong and durable homes. Later on some super highways, bridges and the tall buildings were also constructed using it.

When building using it you either apply it by hand or with help of a special machine and is applied in two or three coats to form a thinness of 7/8 inches thick. What makes the material ideal for most construction work it its ability to breath and allow moisture to escape. Stucco is also resistant to impact and water. The first layer is called scratch coat which is mainly composed of cement and sand. The second layer is called the leveling coat. The material is made of sand, cement and lime. Once the first coat has been applied you have to scratch the wall using a special brash to pave way for the second coat.

The other application is in artistic work and sculpture. Muslims have used it in decorating their mosques and shrines in the past and presently. Baroque and Rococo largely used it in their decorative work in exterior design.

It is used also in frame work. This has been its major application for some time now. It is applied on the surface of wooden frames together with some plastic wrappings also known as it wraps to protect them from moisture and allow the free passage of any moisture generated within to find their way out though the way.

There is another kind of stucco which has come into use since 1950s. This kind is called the synthetic stucco. Its major difference with the original one is their weight. The real one weighs more than the synthetic one. It is made of foam insulators. This is used as a facade on the outer wall of the buildings in place of the cement one since it can easily be applied. It is also used in the construction of pavements in airports, bridges and canals.

The outer covering of houses is made of stucco since it is attractive, does not get corroded easily and is relatively low in maintenance. Many houses and homes today are painted to look like stucco but this paint cannot last as longer as this material hence it still preferred for exterior design.
