Kenya Tours – Lakes

The Kenya tour does not only comprise of exploring national parks, amazing wildlife, and spectacular sites as well as the rich ethnic cultures. This country lies on the Great Rift Valley, a site of the pre-historic fissures extending from Jordan to Mozambique. As a result of this, Kenya has several fresh water lakes that tourists will definitely enjoy on the Kenya tour. The Kenya tour of the lakes will therefore take a visitor from one lake to another to discover the contrasts, flora and Fauna found in each section of the Rift Valley.

A Kenya tour of the lakes will possibly start with Lake Baringo situated to the extreme north of the Rift Valley. Fed by two rivers, the lake has no outlets yet it’s a freshwater lake. The area around this lake is habited by over 480 bird species and migrating flamingoes making it a must see site on the Kenya tour.

The Kenya tour of the lakes does not go without a visit to Lake Bogoria famous for its hot springs. This alkaline lake has algae deposits that attract flamingoes making it a key tourist attraction.

On the southern part of the Rift Valley lies Lake Magadi a 100 sq Km Lake found in the middle of vast salt flats. At an altitude of 5900 ft, Lake Naivasha is the second fresh water Lake in the Rift Valley. It has an area of 160 sq km with an average depth of 5 m; anybody on the Kenya tour of the lakes will spot many kinds of wildlife, numerous bird species especially the flamingoes (a major attraction) during boat rides and nature walks here.

Lake Turkana is another Lake one will not like to miss on the Kenya tour. Formerly known as Lake Rudolf, this lake is part of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya though the northern part lies in Ethiopia. Having an area of 6405 sq km, Lake Turkana is the world\’s largest permanent desert lake, and the most saline of Africa\’s great lakes. Also known as the Jade Sea, the lake and the three national parks around harbors the Nile Perch, Tilapia, Nile Crocodiles, snakes, Cheetahs, Lions, Giraffe and migratory birds. The Kenya tour to Lake Turkana will therefore show that this Lake is a natural treasure, with the world\’s single largest crocodile population. In this lake, the crocodiles grow up to record sizes, with some of the largest being found on remote wind-swept Central Island. The Koobi Fora fossil deposits found in neighboring Sibiloi National Park are protected as significant pre-historic research sites since their discovery in 1967 by Richard Leakey. The deposits rich in mammalian, molluscan and other fossil remnants, have contributed significantly to the understanding of paleo-environments than any other site in Africa.

Lake Turkana is therefore the nation’s most remote destination, but one that can repay a tourist on the Kenya tour with rich rewards. The area is again part of Mount Kulal Biosphere Reserve set up by UNESCO to study arid lands listed in UNESCO\’s World Heritage Sites.

On the Kenya tour, especially of the lakes, one will definitely like to visit the second largest fresh water lake in the world. Lake Victoria lies in a high plateau on the western section of the Great Rift Valley and partly lies in Tanzania and Uganda. Having 68870 sq km, Lake Victoria is the largest tropical lake in the world and the source of River Nile, the second largest river in the world. Over 3000 islands are found in the Lake with only a few being inhabited. The Kenya tour of the lakes is therefore an ultimate lifetime experience.
