Different Types of Self Storage

Whenever you start accumulating possessions, which in most cases is soon after you are born, they need to be stored. Self storage can start at a very young age. This can be as soon as you need, or in most cases told, to put things away. Where are you going put them? At this stage of life it is probably a drawer or wardrobe.

Put those toys away, where? Oh I know Ill put them in that toy box over there. You are self storing because you know that at a later date you can go to the toy box and get those things out again.

Those possessions usually keep on growing as you get older. Guitars, surfboards, skis golf clubs motorbikes and cars the list can just keep growing. You may be still living at home with your parents.

What happens when you do leave home but maybe not to a home of your own? You might be going off to university to live in a dorm or moving in to a small rented apartment with some friends. Are you just going to pack those things up and put them in your parents\’ garage or basement? They might want to move on and down size the house or be looking forward to finally being able to park the car in the garage.

You could sell some of your things but you may have become attached to them. They might be valuable to you and besides you might still want to access and use them. The solution may be to store them in a commercial self storage facility. These places rent space for storage. The area might be as small as a cupboard or as large as a double garage and all sizes and shapes in between.

A self storage facility could be a collection of single level corrugated steel clad sheds set out in a field, in some places these are called a lock ups. They could be multilevel facilities that might look more like a department store. The former would be found in a more rural area whilst the latter in an urban setting. Some may have been converted to a storage facility after previously being used as something else. It may have once been a department store.

There are facilities available that are even air conditioned or refrigerated for storing special temperature sensitive items. High security storage facilities also exist for more precious items or classified documents. These would probably be used by firms that are required to retain and access sensitive information.

Other facilities might specialize in storing one item, for example boats where these would be sited near a marina and have direct access to the water. Similarly some people could store specialist fast cars near race tracks because they might not be street legal.

The self in self storage usually refers to the fact that the user can access their items at any time that the facility is open. It is like having an apartment for things where you are the tenant. It is just that you cannot live there.
