Different Types of Suits in History

For over three hundred years men\’s fashion has consisted of suits in many styles. Some of these having matching waist coats, breeches and long coats. Within the Seventeenth Century elaborate ones were fashioned in bright hues with the additions of powdered wigs, knee styled trousers and coats that flourished in the court of the Royal\’s. Coats named frocks were also very fashionable during this Victorian era.

Within the Nineteenth Century the men\’s style of suit changed to more tailored, professionally cut versions which included neck ties which were knotted for added style. Colors changed from brighter coloring to more darker ones such as grey, black, brown, navy and tans.

Close to the end of the Nineteenth Century\’s end the new more informal suit jackets came to be worn called dinner jackets being worn to more casual affairs. The Men really liked this new freedom of wearing not so formal wear to parties and gatherings with the dinner jacket. As this style moved to the United States and is now known as the black tie dress suit a tuxedo.

At World War I end the long coat soon went out of style and the new short coat suit came into fashion. These short coat ensembles were acceptable for almost all occasions except more formal affairs were the tuxedo was still worn. Trouser\’s in men\’s wardrobes took on straight, wider legs in the 1920 era.

These were sometimes known as Oxford Bag styles. Some of these trouser\’s had added cuffs at their hems for more detail and higher waist cuts with more creasing.In these times almost every man was some type of executive and even the one\’s who were not still chose to wear a suit. These styles stayed in fashion until the second World War.

In the middle of the 1930\’s change in men\’s clothing styles happened again. Coats were made of looser fits, tapered trousers which fit more snug were showing up on business men of the time. Their waist coats were styled more loose fitting and suit coats which were double-breasted were all the rage. Hats of course were also worn during most of these periods to finish the stylish looks of each part of their wardrobes.

Some famous styles over the years include the Mod, the Safari, the Disco, the Nudie, the Beatle, the Western, the Zoot, the Nehru and the Jazz. The men\’s suits of today are still a little on the conservative side but consist of lighter shirts in varying colors, ties in many patterns, trousers that match the two or the three piece suit and a nice pair of shoes.

Some men even choose brighter shirts in different hues to go with darker colors if they are feeling fashionable. Suits are not just for career wear they can be everyday wear as well. So many designers have different versions there is sure to be more than one style you will lean toward. Women\’s suits are also high in the fashion world and has been for over a hundred or more years.
