MLM is Dead and Buried – Or, Is It?

MLM is the acronym for the well known Multi-Level Marketing system, a popular and highly successful marketing strategy that has been in use by legions of marketing outfits for the past 60 years. The popularity and success of the system is attributed to a unique compensation package it provides its sales force. Aside from getting paid for personally generated sales, the networker also gets paid for the sales of other people he recruits. This produces a multi-level compensation for the networker coming from a down line of distributors he is able to establish. As the worker recruits more people the more his residual income balloons. Simply put, it is building a long term residual income by building a down line.

MLM is also known as network marketing or referral marketing. Through the years, its success as a marketing strategy attracted many companies wanting to inject life to their lagging sales to adopt it too. And it wasn’t long before companies of ill refute or with products of no real value to sell started adopting the strategy. To them, the profit making dynamic is more important than the product. They weren’t real businesses anymore! They were recruiting businesses where last guy at the bottom gets speared and left holding an empty bag!

Because of this, MLM companies received mounting criticism for putting more emphasis on recruitment over actual sales and for requiring its sales personnel to purchase company’s products as a requisite of their employment. At the same time criticisms and lawsuits against many companies started to sprout like mushrooms, people also started to develop the notion that it is exploitative and its marketing scheme likened to illegal pyramid schemes. And so today, people naturally shy away from anything that has got to do with /MLM/ or Network Marketing. A lot of people I know wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole!

But is MLM gone, dead and buried, archived?

Well, at least this is what many wants to believe so. This is also what many companies want other people to believe so! But the nasty truth is /MLM/ has reared its ugly head again with beefed up marketing strategies, this time using the internet as its foraying field.

Disguised as affiliate networks, MLM has once more saturated the market with multi level marketing business opportunities using the world-wide-web as its platform. This time they are careful enough not to allow the term MLM be identified with their programs. They have now employed more sophisticated means to once more lure unsuspecting future network marketers. However, they have kept intact the basic MLM principles namely 1) the duplication of simple marketing plans, 2) residual income, and 3) leverage. This time around, the internet has opened up new avenues for them to exploit. With the internet, the network ‘affiliates’ no longer have to resort to relationship marketing such as soliciting all of their friends and family (as was the practice with the old MLM) to build their down line. MLM is once more storming the internet preying on helpless individuals who are in constant search for online opportunities to earn extra income working from their homes.

However, this will not be for long as MLM will soon be rendered obsolete by the entry of new work-from-home earning opportunities that discard MLM’s traditional down line building!
