Organic Coffee Industry Update

The organic specialty coffee industry has been growing at a rapid pace in recent years. It used to be that this kind of coffee was fairly uncommon, but now you can get it at many grocery stores and specialty stores online. The growing popularity of this coffee is bringing the farmers a better way of life, and the consumers are able to enjoy coffee that is much higher in quality.

In order to be considered organic, the coffee has to adhere to certain standards regarding the environment that it is grown in, and it must also lack the chemicals that are used in many of the more mass produced coffees of today.

It is said that the best method of collecting the coffee berries is by hand. In order for the coffee to be considered organic, it must be collected in separate containers from other types of coffee that may not be up to standards. In the event that the containers have been previously used to collect coffee that is not organic, they must be thoroughly washed beforehand. In addition to that, any equipment that is used must not have touched non-organic coffee beforehand. This is to avoid allowing the coffee to become contaminated by pesticides and weed killers.

There also has to be methods in place for sustaining the soil and water levels. This means that organic and natural waste must be recycled and turned into fertilizer. In addition to that, water must be recycled.

The coffee beans end up getting shipped to a roasting facility, which must also be fully qualified to roast organic coffee beans. In the event that the roaster works with both types of coffee, the two must be completely segregated from one another during the entire process.

This industry is mutually beneficial for both the consumers and the farmers. On the consumer end of it, there is a substantial advantage in a sense that they are able to purchase specialty coffee that is much higher in quality. The small farms that produce this coffee use better growth and production methods, and the environment in which the coffee is grown in is much more ideal for producing coffee beans of the highest quality. However, organic coffee will be slightly higher in price. This is where it becomes beneficial to the farmers who produce this kind of coffee.

It takes a substantial amount of money for the farmers to maintain such high standards. This means that a lot of money that the farmers get for their coffee will go straight back into their farms for production and equipment. However, it is also better because the higher price allows the farmers to live a much higher quality of life. It used to be that the farmers had to take great care to produce high quality coffee with little financial reward. However, now that the organic coffee industry has exploded the way that it has, both farmers and consumers can benefit from the import and export of such high quality specialty coffee!
