Relationships? How Does Anyone Find the Time?

There is a lot to be said for the single life. You can do what you want when you want with no static from another person. Feel like going to an art show all of a sudden? Go to the art show. The gang is gathering for martinis down the street after work – go on down. You are free, over twenty-one and answer to no one but yourself.

It\’s no secret that younger generations are waiting longer to do…well, just about everything. Achieving a bachelor\’s degree has become a five or even six year ordeal. Most higher-paying jobs require master degrees anyway, so college is a long haul. Marriages happen when people are well into their thirties and children, thanks to in vitro fertilization, factor in exactly on schedule. Play your cards right and you can even have a much younger woman carry your child to term for you and your spouse.

There is no time in the typical young professional\’s life for a serious long-term committed relationship. Sure, they have a career and maybe a hobby or two, but they must also check into Facebook and Twitter, answer emails, appear at the best social or business networking affair occasionally and tailgate with buddies for the home game, and that is just one day in the life. Life is a whirlwind of events.

All this whirlwind stuff gets expensive. The bar scene may not be the most ideal spot for meeting one\’s life\’s companion, but it does allow for social contact. All for the price of a drink or two at around $9.00 each, that certainly adds up. You also have the option of going out on a semi-blind date with other time challenged singles you meet on an internet dating site. Dating any more is not about finding a lifelong mate, but has to do with picking the right traits in a short-term companion. Some dating sites will attempt to hook up partners on the sole basis of likes and dislikes. These desirable traits may include everything from what kind of car he/she has to financial assets to the condo in the right neighborhood. Chemistry between partners is no longer an issue.

The single life can be very similar to running a gauntlet. The many demands of a packed schedule beating on you from every side. Work, grad school, and friends from one side. Staying in shape, budgeting, and the charity 5K from another. It appears as if there is little hope for the manic singles of the twenty-first century.

There are ways off the treadmill if one wants to find them. The first step may be to trade in your smart phone for a do-nothing-but talk-on-the-phone cell phone. Lots of people really need smart phones for work, but off work, singles with stressed lives may look inward and reassess if they really must have them on 24/7. Truly, if you spend all your leisure time scouring social media sites or playing word games with pals, your phone is a detriment to your life. For one thing, you are putting in many hours of work just to pay that smart phone bill if you spend that amount of time on it. Ditch the overtime and smart phone and you may find time to something really worthwhile outside of the virtual world. You may actually spend quality time in the real world, not six minutes of face time before careening off to your next superficial time waster.

Not every single person lives a life verging on mania. Some are seriously fiscally responsible. Some do stop and smell the roses along the path to work. Some people remain single but play the field and spend the time to really get to know a few of them. Some do, yes, but most don\’t. It is good to be young, wild and free. Just remember, you are no longer in high school. Meditate alone for a while and you might meet someone you would like to know – yourself.
