Unlike a standard unit, the climate controlled one will keep humidity and heat at bay. In turn, the cloth, paper, or other delicate material doesn\’t rot, mildew, or grow mold.

Similar to standard climate controlled units, some facilities offer lockers with refrigeration units. In this more specialized space can be stored those items which require low, constant temperatures to maintain quality. The facilities will not always guarantee that the temperatures will be maintained at all times. They are, however, a good option for overflow from bursting refrigerators or professional kitchens with ordering problems.

A newer development in self storage are lockers that are delivered then picked up for holding. This saves the renter from having to haul their extra items to the facility. It also allows for more efficient warehousing of excess personal items. Because the renter never enters the facility, it doesn\’t have to be a series of low buildings, but can be a large open warehouse.

After being boxed, the possessions in their portable locker are transported to the facility, where they are scanned in and kept as inventory, like in any other warehouse. When the owner wants the items back, the crate is removed from it\’s secure location and delivered where the owner wants. Some may consider this a different form, as the person renting the space doesn\’t have control over the locker the entire time, but as they both pack and unpack the locker, it is similar enough to be included.

For those with overflowing homes, back rooms, or garages, self storage allows a way to keep everything without feeling like the subject of a show on hoarding. Important inventory can be maintained, family heirlooms saved, just not on site.
