A Child\’s Visit to the Dentist

Everyone knows that visiting the dentist is important. We begin seeing a dentist as early as two years old when those first little teeth start popping out. At that age it is especially important for parents to have their children\’s\’ teeth checked. Primarily for the reason of preventing early tooth decay.

It is also beneficial for younger children to make regular visits because it promotes good healthy oral hygiene habits for the many years to come. Children learn how to brush properly and floss during these visits. They also gain the knowledge of what foods to avoid and how to prevent tooth decay.

In the past, many small children have sometimes shown a great deal of anxiety prior to these routine visits. In understanding this anxiety, dental offices have gone to great lengths to make certain their little patients feel comfortable. In doing so, children now seem less fearful in anticipating these visits and seem to be more willing to go.

One of the ways in which these offices have changed is the atmosphere. Upon entering many of these offices, there is now a warm and friendly feeling. Making the decor \’kid friendly\’ has really helped the little ones feel much more comfortable, especially when they arrive to sit in the the waiting room.

Another aspect that has been improved upon is the comfort while sitting in the examining chair. Sunglasses are now provided to alleviate the glare from the overhead light. Many hygienists also provide headphones in order for their patients to listen to music. Some even have gone as far to install monitors for watching TV shows or movies.

The experience during the actual exam has changed as well. Technology has made it possible to have a painless experience while being examined. Gas is used on children who cannot handle the pain of a Novocaine needle. Additionally, topical pastes are now used for numbing gums prior to drilling. Laser technology is also used when warranted. For those children who still have a difficult time prescription medication can be prescribe to relieve their stress while being examined.

When the exam is complete, kids are usually rewarded by going to a treat box to pick out a toy. Sometimes they even spend more time at this toy box than they did in the chair for the examination. They are also given a cute little bag with all kinds of samples to take home and use. It is always fun for them to look through this bag.It certainly makes for a much better visit with all the things they have to look forward to when they are finished with the dentist.

It is undeniable that a visit to the dentist today isn\’t nearly as traumatic for children as it has been in the past. Some, because of all the changes that have been made actually enjoy and look forward to this visit. To many kids it has become more of an adventure than a visit to getting their teeth checked or an endless lesson in good oral hygiene.
