Can Taser Guns Kill?

In using self defense equipment, the main objective that you have in using it is to stop an attack or incapacitate your attacker. This can provide you with an opportunity to escape and call for help. Among the many self defense equipment being used, the most efficient is the Taser gun. It is being used by law enforcers as well as civilians. However, models for civilian use have lower power compared to those that are being used by law enforcers.

Although it is efficient in stopping an attacker, most people question if whether or not a taser gun can kill someone. Here are some things that you should need to know about it:

How does it work?

This equipment is used by firing probes attached with thin electrical wires, targeted at an attacker. When the probes come in contact with the attacker\’s skin or clothing, it delivers an electrical current which temporarily disrupts the nervous and muscular system for a short duration.

The electrical current being discharged when the probes comes in contact with the attacker causes the muscles to undergo involuntary contractions. This freezes the muscles, disabling the attacker for several seconds to fifteen minutes, providing you enough time to escape and call for help. You can effectively fire the equipment ten to fifteen feet away from your attacker depending on the model. This provides you with the advantage of disabling them from a distance, rather than needing to be near the attacker to directly shock them as you would do with a stun gun.

Electrocution and lethal effects

The taser gun delivers static electricity of about 25,000 volts to incapacitate a person hit with it. However, it does not cause electrocution as the electricity is delivered through a low wattage. It only incapacitates the person for a short duration without permanent damaging effects, unlike a hand gun which can cause death or serious injuries.

Since the discharged electricity output is limited and not enough to cause electrocution, you will not get shocked if you come in contact with the person hit with the discharged. If you accidentally discharged it and hit your friend or family member, you can immediately help them.

There are has been a number of reports of death related to the use of the equipment. However, the main cause of death is not being hit by a taser gun. Most of the cases have included people with history of heart problems which have undergone great stress or have been hit repeatedly several times with the equipment at one occasion. It is safe to assume that the equipment will not cause death and is much safer to use for self defense compared to a hand gun.

Safety precautions

If you decide on purchasing one to protect you in case of an attack, you should first secure yourself from any legal issues. Some countries and localities permit certain models for civilian use, while others may have different regulations. Make sure that you check with local authorities regarding the regulations of the use of Tazers.

Another thing that you should keep in mind is to regularly check your equipment and familiarize yourself with its use. If you\’re not familiar with your equipment or if it malfunctions at the time when you need to use it, it defeats the purpose of enhancing your security.
