Cocaine Brain Damage – How it Will Affect You

It\’s common knowledge that the use of cocaine has adverse effects on the human body. It alters its user\’s mood, can cause a variety of long term health effects, and has the potential to ruin one\’s relationships and opportunities. Cocaine brain damage is probably the most alarming of its negative aspects, however, as it can lead to devastating results and irreversible consequences for its users poor actions.

In a recent study, it was shown that blood flow within a heavy cocaine users brain is sluggish, when compared to a non-users brain. This is due to the fact that cocaine causes constriction of the blood vessels. In another study it was even found that merely thinking of cocaine altered cerebral blood flow. When using cocaine with other substances, such as alcohol, heroin, or tobacco, this decrease in blood flow is even more noticeable, and can lead to further brain damage or even death.

Excessive use of cocaine or prolonged usage can cause hallucinations and paranoid delusions. It can also cause learning disabilities, memory loss, strokes, and attention deficit issues, just to name a few. Each time a person uses cocaine they suffer cocaine brain damage to some degree, and by damaging the dopamine neurons within the brain, a tolerance is built up against the drug. Therefore, higher levels of cocaine are required to achieve the “high” that the user experienced. This leads to increased brain damage and further increases the chances of developing one of the many conditions associated with continued cocaine usage.

When trying to withdraw oneself from cocaine addiction, there are a variety of side effects which may present themselves. The user may experience unpleasant dreams, insomnia, increased appetite, and psycho motor agitation. Though it is always recommended that cocaine usage be stopped immediately, as these withdrawal side effects pale in comparison to the cocaine brain damage the user can potentially inflict upon themselves with further cocaine dependency.

There are also a number of physical side effects that one can expect to experience with cocaine usage. One might experience severe lung trauma from smoking cocaine, or tooth decay and loss of enamel. By snorting cocaine, one can expect to eventually do permanent damage to their nasal passage and can degrade the nasal cartilage. Of course, there is always a chance of overdose when using cocaine, thereby leading to the possibility of coma or death.

Cocaine brain damage is a devastating and life changing side effect of drug usage. It can forever alter the way its users interact with others and their ability to lead a long and productive life. Considering the fact that more than two million Americans are cocaine users, and that statistic is only climbing, drastic measures must often be taken to stop the damage that this drug continues to inflict.
