Controlling Incontinence Caused Due to Stress in Aged People

Many people assume that incontinence is something that only affects the ill, bedridden, and elderly. You may be surprised to learn that not only is this untrue but that stress can affect your risk of developing incontinence no matter your age or health status. While there is several different treatments for incontinence including: medications, behavioral therapies, and even surgery most doctors will recommend that controlling stress can have a very beneficial effect on controlling incontinence. Many people are turning to breathing exercises, yoga, and even meditation to help them control stress and reduce their incontinence symptoms.

One of the first steps that you should take when you begin experiencing incontinence is to find the right incontinence product to meet your needs. This means finding an incontinence undergarment that is appropriate to the level of absorbency that you need in addition, to the fit and gender type. Studies have shown that when people have the right incontinence underwear to help them manage their incontinence symptoms they can then focus on controlling and reducing their symptoms. Keep in mind that shopping for incontinence products doesn’t need to be stressful either. Whether you are using incontinence pads, incontinence underwear, or adult diapers you can find them all at online sites that offer adult incontinence products.

Once you have the right incontinence product you can then begin focusing on reducing your stress and in turn reducing your incontinence symptoms. There are several different ways that you can do this. These steps for reducing stress and incontinence include but are not limited to:

– Be careful with what you eat and drink-Many people are surprised to learn that what they eat and drink can directly affect their incontinence. Keep in mind that your diet may include things that you need to eat and drink and other things that you need to avoid. You should try to stay away from oily and spicy foods as well as citrus fruits. You should also avoid foods that are high in fat and highly processed as they can make incontinence symptoms worse. In addition, you need to avoid or reduce any beverages that contain caffeine as well as alcoholic drinks as they can over stimulate and irritate your bladder. Finally, it is important to limit your intake of carbonated beverages as they can become a bladder irritant. Many people report significant improvements in their incontinence symptoms after making dietary changes.

-Stop smoking-Smoking has been shown to not only be a bladder irritant but many smokers develop a strong cough which can put increased pressure on the entire abdominal area. Unfortunately, many people see smoking as an antidote for stress however; smoking can only make incontinence worse and does little to actually reduce stress. The bottom line is that if you smoke you need to stop today and if you don’t smoke, don’t start.

– Take off some weight-The reality is that the extra weight you are carrying around doesn’t just put extra stress on your heart and lungs but also on the muscles in the pelvic region, as well. When there is constant pressure from extra weight on your bladder and the surrounding muscles it becomes difficult to control incontinence symptoms. Taking off weight can not only reduce your incontinence but reduce your stress, as well. However, before starting any new diet or exercise routine you should consult your doctor for recommendations that are specific for you.
