Make Sure the Hotels Aren\’t All Booked When You Travel

There are many new and adventurous experiences that come with traveling to developing countries. One place people don\’t always expect those new experiences to show up is in the hotels. For the inexperienced, the accommodations in some countries can be shocking. While there may be some five star resorts, locally owned places are and entirely new world for most.

The first thing that can shock some visitors is that there may not be a bathroom and toilet attached to each guest room. While this is standard in high quality, internationally owned establishments, most smaller places don\’t consider it a requirement. They may have a shared bathroom down the hall for all guests. Alternately, there may be different rates for a room with and without a private bath.

Along with the private toilet, in many places hot water isn\’t always available. In countries where this is true, establishments offering hot water will display it on their signs and advertising. Sometimes hot water for showers comes from a water heater like at home, sometimes from a modern on-demand system, or more often, from a heated shower head. The wiring on the last one can be extra thrilling, with some delivering a shock in addition to the water.

The third bathroom-related shock about hotels in developing countries has to do with the toilet and plumbing itself. The plumbing in these countries is often not robust enough to handle disposing of toilet paper. This means it all needs to be left in the bathroom trash. Other countries may have a small spray-head on a hose next to the toilet instead of paper.

When it comes to the room itself, it is important to check before agreeing to stay. Outside foreign-owned resorts, the quality and cleanliness of rooms can vary greatly within a single building. One room might have no windows and be very loud, while another can have great views of the entire surrounding area. The owners are usually happy to show a few rooms in hope of renting one.

In some places, the standards of cleaning and hygiene are not what modern travelers are used to. Some of the lower cost hostelries may not change the sheets with each guest, but rather once per week or month. It can be an experience for someone interested in history. It is not, however, usually an enjoyable one. Checking the bed can be done while looking at rooms. Some may actually not provide sheets at all, expecting travelers to bring their own.

The final thing that can amaze those not expecting it is the freedom with locks. Rooms may not lock at all. They may just have a simple latch. Others may lock with a padlock on the inside when in the room, and the outside when the guests aren\’t in the room. Some places require guests to leave the key at the desk every time they leave the building.

Traveling in countries at a different point of development than home has much to offer. Knowing what to expect from hotels once there can make it easier to adjust to all the other exciting differences.
