Old and New Business Opportunities

In the twenty-first century there are many new business opportunities, perhaps more than there have ever been before. Many of the new openings are connected with the Internet, with computer technology and with the \’green revolution\’. However, the very oldest business opportunities are connected with trading and these exist now as since they have since ages past.

About two decades ago an African entrepreneur saw the financial merits in selling cut price clothing. He started with a table on the street loaded with cheap garments. Twenty years later he has a chain of stores throughout the continent and other budding entrepreneurs set up tables on the street outside selling the same products for less. The point of the story is that opportunities are always there but some succeed in taking them whilst others do not.

Although many people seize chances and hold on to them for a while, in most cases the businesses are wrested from their grasp by the vicissitudes of life. The fortunate ones are those who sell their start ups before they go bankrupt. Very few start up and thrive, and grow sustainably. It appears that there are special skills, aptitudes and qualities that are needed if a firm is to grow in size beyond a critical level when it gathers a momentum and grows exponentially.

It must be admitted that chance plays a role. The successful person may \’take arms\’ against his circumstances but cannot always challenge chance effectively. In Russia communist dictators destroyed generations of entrepreneurs and in China many were sent for \’political re-education\’ being forcibly removed from their own enterprises. One of the wealthiest men in America admits that his success is due in part to a system that allows him to grow and prosper.

Since the advent of the Internet in the nineteen nineties many online developments have taken place. Only a few have hit the jackpot, but stories of fabulous wealth that have been generated by the few winners have inspired thousands of others to try their luck. The rush to own computers and keep up with the technological revolution generates yet more entrepreneurial avenues for those who can fix machines, untangle software programs and come up with the \’solutions\’ that they advertise on the sides of their business vehicles.

Web developers have opportunities to build sites for others and maintain them. They may also set up their own sites and try to profit from them by selling services or products. Videos, DVD, eBooks and videos are products that spring to mind. They are relatively easy to produce and sell as tangible products.

Producers of traditional goods and services are also offered new challenges. Religious groups who produce hand made furniture have been quick to seize chances to exploit global markets. The excellence of their products can now be advertised to a global market.

It is perhaps predictable that those who were successful before the Internet transformation have been the ones to quickly exploit new business opportunities. Traditional stores have the capital to set up effective sites maintain them and provide back up delivery services. Service providers such as doctors and lawyers have also started to bolster their practices by using online promotions. The entrepreneurial aptitudes that were applicable in the past are apparently applicable in the new era too.
