Starting Up a Roofing Business of Your Own

Starting a business of any kind can be exciting and difficult with all the different things that you have to do to prepare for the business. However; it is also something that will allow you to not only showcase the skills that you have but also to earn an income from those skills. This is no different for anyone who might be considering starting their own roofing business. If this is something you are considering but worrying that it might just be seasonal, think again, if you offer the right services, you could stay busy all year long.

The first and foremost thing you should do before you start up your business is to get the insurance that you are going to need to protect you, your company, the customer and your employees. You need a variety of different insurances for protection of your business. You need insurance to cover any damage done to property, to cover injury and anything else that might happen on the job.

You will need to make sure that you cover everything that you have listed as equipment to get your business started and this should include very important safety equipment. Some items you need to consider purchasing should be retractable cables and lanyards, roof anchors, hard hats, guardrails, lots of ear plugs, allergy masks, different first aid kits, protection for your eyes, different harnesses and overalls.

You expense list will also need to include different hand tools as well. Some important ones should include hammers, cutters for shingles and slate, hatchets, pry bars, scissors, squeegees, caulking and caulking guns and trowels. You also might want to include hoist wheels and hoists, gravel buckets, different sized ladders, nails, measuring tapes, tools for marking, mops and brooms for clean up.

You will more than likely already have a truck, trailer or van to carry all of your equipment and supplies in so it\’s important that you get enough cargo straps for all of it. You will need to strap in all of your equipment and supplies so that nothing gets damaged when going from job to job.

You more than likely are not going to be able to do roofing by yourself so you will need to consider hiring at least one other person to help you get the business going. This person should be highly skilled and licensed. You can hire those with little experience and who are looking to learn after your business a lot more experienced and established.

Once everything is in place and you are ready to get the business rolling you need to sit down and figure out just what services you plan to offer to your customers and how much you are going to charge for the different services. Then you need to decide upon what kinds of payments your business will accept. It\’s probably a wise idea to start off with just accepting cash and checks and then add credit cards later on down the road.

When you are sure you have everything and are ready to go you are going to have to go and apply for your business license. You also may need to apply for a sales tax permit. You will need to get your federal tax ID set up and make sure you have any and all permits that might be required to do roofing business. If you aren\’t sure if you need any then make sure you get a hold of local construction authorities.
