Traveling With a Disability

If you have a disability, the thought of traveling can be daunting, but don’t let a handicap keep you from seeing the world. It is unfortunate that the sense of urgency on behalf of both passengers and airport staff can read as impatience and even intolerance, but with a little advance planning, you can enjoy a relaxing and invigorating trip.

There are lots of travel agencies that specialize in planning trips for those with disabilities. They will be able to help you find transportation and accommodations according to your needs, and can find you the best price on a room with a handicap bathtub or roll-in shower if you need it. A travel agent can also assist you if you need a wheelchair or oxygen at the airport or if you would like to rent equipment at your destination. If you are going to use your own electric wheelchair or scooter, make sure it’s in tip-top condition before you go. Will you need a nurse or an assistant at your destination? Your travel agent may be able to arrange that as well. If not, speak to your doctor or contact the American Association of People with Disabilities or a similar organization for help.

Plan to get to the airport early so you’ll have plenty of time to check in and alert the staff of any special needs you may have during your trip. While they should be expecting you if your travel agent has done his job, it’s still a good idea to avoid any surprises. Most airlines require you to check in about two hours ahead of your scheduled flight when checking luggage.

If you require medication, bring a folder with copies of your prescriptions and what they’re for, just in case, and pack medicine in your carry-on to avoid any trouble due to lost luggage. Try to bring your medication in the original container as well. Unmarked containers may cause the clearance process to take longer than is necessary. You should also have the number of your doctor handy, should you need emergency care, and double-check your health insurance. If you require a service animal, be sure to alert the airline, the hotel, and the transportation service you will be using beforehand.

Don’t forget to have fun! Travel should be a delightful adventure, not a headache. Ask your travel agent to find handicap accessible tourist attractions and restaurants at your destination and make reservations in advance. There are wheelchair friendly tours of national parks; there are cruises, RV tours, and amusement park packages, even special New York vacations that include Broadway plays and the Statue of Liberty! The key to safe and stress-free travel is planning and communication. While it is best to leave the planning to the professionals, save yourself a headache by double-checking every detail. The further in advance you plan your trip, the more smoothly it will go. Likewise, when the staff of the airline, cruise line, hotel, and restaurant are expecting you, you will be treated with respect and dignity while receiving the care you need.
