CPAP: The Preferred Sleep Apnea Treatment

Pronounced “see-pap,” the CPAP device involves a machine that delivers constant air pressure through a tube and nasal mask. The air pressure must be high enough to keep the airway open during sleep.

Modern devices include therapy tracking software, back-up power options, and a heated humidifier. They also include washable or disposable filters, and changing these filters are the only maintenance required for the machine.

Benefits of Continuous Positive Airway Therapy

Continuous positive airway pressure is a constant, steady air flow that opens the airway and keeps it open. This allows for uninterrupted breathing during sleep. It eliminates sleep apnea symptoms and gives the sleeper a restful night of sleep.

A sleep study determines the proper level of air pressure required for a patient, and a doctor will prescribe the machine at that level of pressure. Traditional therapy uses a nasal mask that seals around the sleeper’s nose, and it provides constant pressure.

Other innovative devices offer various levels of pressure, as per doctor prescription, and include the bi-level positive air pressure (BPAP) device and oral appliances, or snore guards. While these devices may be more comfortable for some patients, the CPAP is still the preferred method for treating sleep apnea. With time and practice, most patients can learn to adjust their device for the most secure and comfortable fit.
