Different Materials Used For Eyeglasses Frames

Whether you like to wear discount glasses or the most expensive pair in the store, the frames are likely made out of one of a few different materials. Most glasses are made from plastic, metal or a composite material. Within each broad category you can generally find a handful of more detailed categories.

The type you choose will depend on your budget, the look you’re after and the comfort level of the material as the glasses sit on your face. Glasses are a highly individual accessory, and although technically a medical device, the glasses you choose still say a lot about you. It’s always a good idea to take your time when choosing eyeglasses, so you’ll find just the right pair for your face and your personality.

In the plastics category, cellulose acetate is probably the most common material. This type of plastic works for eyeglasses because it is relatively inexpensive and is available in a wide variety of colors, patterns and textures. The versatility of this type of glasses appeals to a wider range of people. Cellulose proprionate is another type of plastic used for glasses that is lightweight and good for making intricate designs. Kevlar is a kind of plastic that was developed for bulletproof vests, but also works well for eyeglasses that may be subject to force or impact. Many types of safety glasses or sports glasses are made from nylon because it is almost impossible to break. Nylon eyeglasses are usually only available in darker colors and may become brittle over time. Optyl is a type of plastic used for glasses that need to be hypoallergenic.

For metal frames, aluminum is one of the choices. Aluminum eyeglasses are lightweight and easy to wear, but are limited as far as different designs because it is difficult to weld. Cobalt is a more expensive metal frame that you won’t find on any discount glasses. Cobalt glasses are flexible, strong, lightweight and can usually be coated with a variety of different colors. Monel is a popular metal used for glasses because it can be made into many different shapes and colors without losing strength. Stainless steel is a metal that’s used often for glasses, and is one of the most corrosion-resistant metals to use.

Composite eyeglasses are generally made from a combination of different materials. Carbon fiber graphite is one type of composite that’s used for glasses to create the endurance of metal eyeglass frames for women while being extremely lightweight. It is naturally black, but you can also get it in different colors for eyeglasses. Copolyamide is a nylon blend that works well for eyeglasses, and Flexon 7 is a composite created from a titanium-based alloy that makes it quite durable. Titanium Ti-227 is a composite that’s about half as heavy as most metal eyeglass frames. This composite is also hypoallergenic, non-corrosive and stronger than regular steel. It is also difficult to extract and refine, meaning you won’t see glasses made from it in any discount glasses stores anytime soon.
