Does My Pillow Choice Really Matter?

The bedmaker Silentnight offers stylish beds, mattresses and pillows and because of their high standards Haskins Furniture is a chosen stockist.

Silentnight has a blog that concerns the finer points of sleep, something that is important to us all. Scientists have proved that although they don’t know why we need it, humans cannot live without sleep. The Silentnight blogs explore when to change your mattress, how to get your kids to sleep and why arguing before bedtime is a bad idea, among other subjects.

The latest subject for somnambulists is whether the choice of pillow really does matter. Well the obvious answer is yes it does. Imagine the difference between sleeping on a dirty pillow case and a freshly laundered one – this is comparable to the difference between sleeping on an old shapeless pillow and a new pillow which can be specifically moulded to your body shape.

There are a number of different types of pillow to choose from;

Memory Foam Pillows

Memory foam pillows literally remember the contours of your body and stay moulded to that shape to provide support in a way that normal pillows cannot offer. That means waking up with muscles that are more relaxed and an avoidance of back aches and pains. In that respect memory foam pillows have revolutionised the pillow industry with the firmest possible neck support. Memory foam can also help regulate your body temperature.

Down Pillows

Down pillows are the ultimate in comfort because they have such a soft filling. Down pillows are filled with feathers and the most comfortable feathers tend to come from ducks and geese. Like memory foam pillows they do mould to the shape of your head, but while they are good for sleeping on your front, they are not so comfortable if you want to sleep on your back. The only possible drawback is that down pillows can irritate you if you have allergies.

Synthetic Pillows

Synthetic pillows on the other hand are less likely to cause allergy irritations but are not as soft as down pillows. While they do have quite a bit of neck support it really cannot be compared to memory foam pillows.
