How to Clean Window Blinds – A Simple Guide

When it comes to giving your house a good spring clean, no one can honestly say that they look forward to the task of giving the window blinds a once-over. Lets face it – it\’s not exactly the most exciting job in the world so it\’s very common for them to get ignored completely, resulting in a substantial build up of dust and grime. This just makes the task that much trickier when you finally get round to it. There is no need to put the task of as help is at hand with this simple guide to getting your blinds clean simply and quickly.

If you have installed venetian blinds in your house then the best way to get these clean is by first removing them completely from your window. The best method of getting rid of the dirt on them is by placing them carefully into a tub which has been filled with soapy water. The most effective way to get them dry again will be by simply exposing them to the air and letting nature take it\’s course. If removing your venetian blinds seems like too much of an effort then an alternative method of cleaning is giving them a wipe down with a mixture of water and vinegar or some similar citrus based cleaner. It is important that you don\’t use furniture polish. If you are looking to get rid of dust which has built up then a vacuum cleaner with simple attachments will take care of the job nicely.

Aluminium blinds can be a little trickier to clean when they get dusty. Your best bet is to give them a good shake or use a specially treated dust cloth to get rid of the majority of the dust build up from in between the slats. If your blinds have become especially grubby then one method that would be worth employing would be to remove them and then spray them with a garden hose. Alternatively you could place them in a bath of warm soapy water and just give them a good scrub down. Be careful when cleaning aluminium blinds as vigorous scrubbing may result in scratches to both you or the blinds.

The first thing to note when cleaning wooden window blinds is that you should steer well clear of water. A more suitable recommendation would be to use a feather duster or a similar cleaning product. If the dust which has settled is fairly light then a vacuum cleaner will take care of the task easily enough. If your blinds are not painted then furnitire polish will be siilarly suitable.

Another common variation of window blinds are shades made from fabric. Again, the best course of action would be to give them a quick pass using your vacuum cleaner attachement. There\’s no need to clean them using water as this will only increase the chances of the colour degrading over time.

So you see, there is really very little to the task of cleaning your blinds. You may even be surprised to find how little time the job actually takes.
