Is Teeth Whitening A Safe Procedure

The media is full of images of film stars and TV personalities, all of whom have gleaming white smiles, and the pressure is on for everyone to follow suit. But just how practical is it to undergo a teeth whitening treatment. Is it suitable for everyone and how long do these results last.

There are lots of different products aimed at making the teeth appear whiter. These range from toothpaste and mouthwash, strips which can be used directly on the teeth, trays which are either custom-made or adapted to fit around the teeth, or in office treatments. The quickest way is to go to your dental office and have the procedure carried out in the dental chair.

It will be over and done with within an hour, so you can even schedule it for your lunch hour. The results of this type of treatment can be quite dramatic, and it\’s ideal if you want a quick fix. You\’ll need to avoid highly coloured foods for a couple of days or so afterwards, and you may experience some sensitivity.

Using trays over a period of weeks can give you a more controlled result. Your dentist can either make a custom set of bleaching trays for you, and will supply you with gel and strict instructions on how to use the product, or you can use an over-the-counter product. The advantage of using custom-made trays is the gel is far less likely to leak out, as this could damage your gums.

Whichever product you choose, it\’s important always to follow the instructions to the letter. Don\’t be tempted to leave the product on any longer than instructed as you could damage your teeth and gums. It\’s also very important to make sure you have a full dental checkup before undergoing any kind of bleaching or whitening treatment.

This is because it is essential to ensure you don\’t have any signs of gum disease or cavities which could be made worse by being exposed to the chemicals. Generally speaking these treatments are very safe provided you take sensible precautions. Once you have a shiny white smile, you can expect it to last anywhere between six months to a year before needing a touch up.

The results are not permanent as each tooth will gradually regain their normal colour. They naturally darken with age which is due to the enamel becoming thinner, exposing more of the natural dentin colour underneath, and it\’s also due to staining. If you are fond of drinking coffee, red wine or smoke you\’ll probably find them beginning to darken again much more quickly.

However don\’t be tempted to try to bleach them more often than recommended as over bleaching can cause them to become brittle and dehydrated. People whose teeth have been over whitened tend to appear slightly grey which isn\’t very appealing. Teeth whitening is a great treatment to have, and can make you feel younger and more attractive, just make sure it is done on a healthy mouth. This procedure won\’t have any effect on porcelain crowns, bridges or veneers, so if you have had substantial restorative work you need to be aware the colour will be unaffected.
