Spray Tanning Methods

The potential for premature wrinkling and skin cancer does little to diminish the allure of a healthy, natural looking tan. While some people continue to bathe in the sun, others turn to indoor tanning beds to achieve the golden skin tone that they desire. Although a majority of people recognize the harm that overexposure to the sun can cause, they may not consider tanning beds to be as damaging. Unfortunately, tanning beds and upright tanning booths use ultraviolet radiation and also increase the risk of problems such as skin tumors. There are fortunately other tanning methods that do not involve the sun or ultraviolet rays. One of these methods is spray tanning, which can be done at home or at a professional establishment.

Spray Tans

Spray tans involve the use of a chemical that is derived from sugar cane and sugar beets, known as dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This chemical causes a reaction on the upper layer of skin cells and results in a tanned appearance that last up to 14 days. There are several methods of spray tanning, including spray tanning booths, airbrushing and aerosol spray tanning. While it safe for use on the skin\’s surface, there may be risks involved if it is inhaled or comes into contact with areas such as the eyes, nose and lips.

Spray Tanning Booths

Spray tanning booths are a quick way to get a spray tan, usually taking only a matter of minutes to complete. They are done in beauty or tanning salons and spas. The tanning technician prepares the customer for the spray and provides instruction on how to move for the best coverage. To ensure that none of the spray gets into the eyes or nose, a person should request eye protection and nose plugs if they are not already provided.

Air Brushing Tanning

Air brushing is a type of spray tan technique in which a hand-held spray gun is used to apply a fine tanning mist on to the body. This typically takes longer than tanning booths, but the technician is able to spray areas that may be missed in spray tanning booths. When getting this type of faux tan, it is important to choose a salon with experienced technicians for the best results. Air brush equipment is also available for home purchase and use, although getting an even all-over application may be more difficult.

At-Home Aerosol Sun Tanning

Aerosol spray tanning products are also available for home use. These are in the form of bottles or cans and are sprayed on bare skin. As with tanning booths and airbrushing, care must be taken to avoid getting the spray into the eyes, nose and mouth. This method of spray tanning can be messy and should be done in the shower or when standing on a towel away from furniture. Assistance is often necessary for smooth application on difficult to reach areas, such as the back.

Regardless of the method, spray tanning is a relatively safe method of achieving a golden complexion. When applied correctly, the results are as attractive and natural as any tan that comes from sun bathing.
